I just found this and thought it was cute...

My sailor.Submariner

I love My Sailor so deeply and true

He is my Husband, my Friend and a Daddy too

He chose his fate when signed that line

To become a Submariner and serve his time

As the Submarine is prepped and the workday ends

He comes home to tell me, "It is that time again"

The night before "The Boat" gets underway

We prepare ourselves for that dreaded day

He Packs his sea bag so snug and tight

For it will be time to leave at dawn's early light

With his sea bag across his shoulder

and the tears in his eyes we know it is time for all the goodbyes

My Sailor and his crew are running silent and deep

Protecting our freedom while awake or asleep

For the beautiful flag flies freely in the wind

My sailor will proudly salute it until the very end

Okay, so my husband got his orders today. We are heading to Bangor, WA from SC. I don't even know where to start! Any one know of off base housing areas that are nice?

The Gateway is on base, and the Lodge is off base a couple miles away. Beyond that I'm not sure of the difference...I stayed at the Gateway once and paid $56/night, before our PCS reimbursement.

Can someone tell me what the difference is between the Navy Lodge and Navy Gateway? I stayed at the Gateway in Meridian and it was nice and only $35 a night. I'm heading to Groton in a couple weeks and the Lodge looks like it's $76 a night.

Not a sub wife, just the girlfriend of one, but I'm curious ... does anyone else have a significant other that is attached to the USS Maryland (specifically the gold crew.) My boyfriend left a bit ago to go on patrol and I have not heard any word from him. I know this isn't too uncommon, I've heard they have to be in "periscope depth" in order to receive/send emails, and that minimize, especially for subs, can last a bit, so has anyone else gotten word from anyone apart of the gold crew since they departed? I'm more or less concerned that he is safe right now.

Casey normally what you can fit in a gallon bag is what can fit in the halfway box :)

At least on the bright side, MM training is much shorter so it won't be nearly as long before he gets to his first duty station! (((Hug)))

Yes, I am in Groton now, my husband got here in February and my son and I came out in April a week before he finished BESS. He was able to get special permission from the Chiefs for us to move out early since I had been technically "homeless" and staying with my parents since he left for bootcamp which was putting stress on the family, and he already had his accompanied orders just hadn't finished BESS yet. He just started TCNO this week, and he had a 4 week hold before starting ATT while he painted a mural for Master Chief. We expect he'll graduate from A school sometime in January or early February depending on how long his hold before A school is.

Thank you so much for your reply!! And my husband arrived in Groton two weeks ago, but he didn't really actually start BESS until this Monday. What he has told me so far is that BESS is 8 weeks long, so he'll probably graduate by the end of September. And then if ATT and TCNO are 4-5 weeks long, then yes your approximation is right he'll probably be in A school around December time. So now I need him to find out how long his A school is lol!! I'm dying to move up there with him in December so I'm going to keep hoping that he would still have 6 months to go around that time! And hopefully I can get him to talk to housing soon, because I would hate to get my hopes up for December :( Are you presently living in Groton right now? And is your husband already in A school?
Comment by MamaMiri (FT) on July 27, 2011 at 2:36pm
Hmm...not sure exactly about STS but ATT and TCNO are both approx 4-5 weeks long (they are self-paced computer classes). There may be a hold of a few days to a month before ATT (but then again there may not), there is no hold between ATT and TCNO, and there may be another hold before A school. STS A school is probably about 4 months, give or take a little, I'm not sure exactly. My husband is an FT and FT A school is 18 weeks (approx 4.5 months), he said ET is a little longer and thought STS is somewhere around there too but wasn't sure exactly. How far into BESS is he? By the end of December, he will probably be at least a third of the way into A school and only have maybe 3 months left to go, so I'm not sure if the Navy would move you/be able to get into base housing at that point. That would be a question for him to ask the Navy Housing Office and Personal Property. You are eligible to move if he has orders to be somewhere for 6 months or longer, typically, but I'm not sure how it works if some or most of that time has already been "used up" if you will, before you want to move. If you're that close and can manage, it might be worth waiting until he has his orders to his first duty station, because unless he gets assigned to a boat in Groton, you would just be moving again in 3 months, give or take.
