I just found this and thought it was cute...

My sailor.Submariner

I love My Sailor so deeply and true

He is my Husband, my Friend and a Daddy too

He chose his fate when signed that line

To become a Submariner and serve his time

As the Submarine is prepped and the workday ends

He comes home to tell me, "It is that time again"

The night before "The Boat" gets underway

We prepare ourselves for that dreaded day

He Packs his sea bag so snug and tight

For it will be time to leave at dawn's early light

With his sea bag across his shoulder

and the tears in his eyes we know it is time for all the goodbyes

My Sailor and his crew are running silent and deep

Protecting our freedom while awake or asleep

For the beautiful flag flies freely in the wind

My sailor will proudly salute it until the very end

I have a question ladies! My husband is currently at BESS in Groton. He just found out his rate is going to be Submarine Sonar Technician. Do any of you have husbands with this same rate? And how long is their schooling? I know he still has ATT and TECHNO to do, and then school specifically for Sonar. But I'm planning on moving to Groton after I finish my last semester of college, which won't be until December. And I'm hoping that the Navy will still be able to move us there, and that we will still be eligible for base housing. Does that sound likely to any of you?

I should add, Emzee, that if they are on blue card and you decide to move at your own expense, he would be able to "visit" you whenever he is not in class or on duty, include overnight. He would need to report in just like everyone else for muster/class/duty/etc and would be in HUGE trouble and at the very least lose his blue card or worse, if he were to be late or not show up. BUT the Navy still would not move you, and you would not have permission to live in Navy family housing.

Typically they are not allowed to live off base and the Navy will not pay for your move until after BESS. There are some cases where they will be granted permission to "live ashore" if there are extenuating circumstances but he would need to talk to his chain of command about that.

RaeEli, I guess that would depend on where the boat they are being assigned to happens to be at that time. One of the guys here who graduated recently and has been assigned to a boat that is home ported here, is on hold for a little while longer and will be flown to the boat when it ports elsewhere because it is currently deployed. If the boat they are assigned to happens to be in home port for a few weeks/months, they would perform duties on the boat in port, then deploy with the boat on its next scheduled deployment.

After Sub School, are submariners usually deployed after being placed at their duty location??

@Emzee, I heard they can leave, they don't have to have a liberty buddy in Groton, just has to be back if he doesn't have a blue card.

I'm hoping to be there by November, but it all depends on if he gets sent to WA for C school. I'm not sure how often it happens, but I'm hoping he'll end up staying in GA for A school and C school.

luvinmatt- thanks so much! I don't have much to move so that shouldn't be a problem. I was just worried I couldn't live with him until he finished school. I'm happy that's not the case! :)

mmaya- he should finish up sub school in september and I'm hoping to move to GA by october after he gets settled. we're so excited! I'm glad I found someone else going to GA soon. When did he graduate boot camp?
