I had to giggle when you said your nephew and his friends check out this site - at PIR when my son's commanders (not sure correct term) came by to say hello I asked if they looked at the parents and tried to guess who belonged to which recruit and they told me "nope, we already know, if they have a picture on Navyformoms.com we've seen it, we check that site out all the time!" Too Cute! Please send a reminder a day or 2 before Michael's birthday and I'll be happy to wish him a happy one!

My son's flight leaves just after 6:00 AM, we have to leave the house no later than 4:00 to get there on time. I am not a morning person, and am already having a huge sense of lonliness! At least for boot camp I knew how long it would be before we could see him, with A-school and beyond I have no idea! At least he gets to take his phone with him now so he can call home more often!

Well if heading home was any indication I'm certain the airport will be full of Sailors heading back to base so I'm sure he won't have a problem getting a few to share the ride! We will be at the airport bright and early too, his flight is scheduled to leave around 6:00 am! Of course that's always subject to change with the delightful winter weather in Chicago! LOL! The week has just flown by! It's been great having my boys home, I dread heading back home after the airport, the house is going to seem so quiet!

Anyone have a sailor heading back to Great Lakes on Jan 3rd? Found a driver while there that has offered to pick my son up and 3 of his buddies at the airport and deliver to the base for $25 each. He was pretty good and quite a character! Let me know, we can hook them up!

I flew in on the 23rd (technically didn't get there till the 24th due to flight delays) and we flew home on the 24th (technically didn't get home until the 25th due to flight delays) I live in New Port Richey, FL. My son came home with me, he has to go back to Great Lakes for A School, he heads back on Jan 3rd. PIR was wonderful and I would recommend to anyone that is debating going, GO! If you go up for the weekend of PIR generally your sailor will get the weekend off to spend time with you although he may have to pull a shift during that time. If it wasn't the holidays that's what we would have done, we were happily surprised that he got leave!

Hi all! Well, after LONG delays I made it to Great Lakes at 1:30 Christmas Eve morning! Was snowing big time when we got to the base and continued to snow throughout PIR - the sailors actually came marching in wearing their long rain coats and white scarves, was an awesome sight! PIR was great! And happy to say that after more LONG delays, we made it home safe and sound 2:30 Christmas morning! Hope all had wonderful holiday and are enjoying their Sailor's being home!

Thanks Alyse! I'll post as soon as I get back to FL! Did get a call yesterday from my son, he's so excited! I'm going to try to get to the meet n' greet they're having for family members at Flanagan's tonight, will depend on the weather though! Hope your Christmas is wonderful!

Hey Navy Moms! Did all of your Sailors make it home this weekend? Have been practically attached to the weather channel this weekend! God willing I will be on a plane tomorrow afternoon to Chicago, hoping to get going before the next snow storm kicks in! Looking like I just might be spending Christmas in Great Lakes though, oh well, I will be with my boy and that's all that matters! Have wonderful holidays with you loved ones!

Trish, I actually walked in the breast cancer 3-day walk the weekend my son left for Great Lakes. I was torn about doing it but he insisted I not miss the walk as I lost my BFF this year to breast cancer. On the 2nd day of the walk Devin met me at the finish line and we went out for dinner together! On the last day of the walk I don't know how I managed but I finished in the first 330 walkers and made it home in time to see him again! But I let his Dad take him to the recruiter's office, I just couldn't bear to do that, instead I stood in my driveway crying like a baby. His recruiter told us we didn't have to wait for a letter from him to get his address, that within 2 days he'd be able to give us one so that's what I did, I started writing right away! It's kind of funny, because once you get past the "how proud we are of you and how much we miss you" part of the letters, you realize, boy we lead pretty boring lives here when you see it in print! LOL! But I keep him posted on all kinds of things and ask him alot of questions about what he's doing. He's even got me writing to a couple of his buddies that aren't getting much mail! You are going to be ok, and you're son is going to make you so proud! Just wait till you wear that "Navy Mom" shirt for the first time! You're heart will burst with pride!

Thanks for the update Debi! I saw on the news last night that flights to/from Chicago have been delayed. That is at the top of my prayer list at the moment, please don't let me miss PIR! Hoping that by the time I have to fly out on the 23rd everything is caught up! Now, if I get stuck in Chicago after PIR, I will just have to deal with that! At least I'll be able to spend the time with Devin! I know there are several that are supposed to be flying home on the 19th - adding them to my prayers that they arrive home safely for the holidays!
