Thanks for the info Alyse! I've actually heard from him far more than I was prepared for, I think because of the unexpected leave he is getting they had to allow for some extra calls. I don't even own a coat so I'm off to Burlington Coat Factory to get one! LOL! I'm a wimp when it comes to cold weather! Devin told me on his last call that they had been instructed in snow shoveling! BRRRRRR!

How exciting for you Debi! I'm flying to Great Lakes on Dec 23rd for my son's PIR on the 24th and then we're flying home that night together! I wasn't expecting PIR until January so this is the most excellent Christmas present ever!

Thanks for all the info Alyse! Happy to hear I can wear slacks! Nothing against dresses, ALOT against freezing! LOL! Can hardly wait to get there. Was a little sad that we won't be getting to see some sites in Chicago, when my boys were young we went there on a vacation and I was kind of looking forward to seeing it through his more mature eyes now! His A school is in Great Lakes so maybe I'll get up there again before he's sent to his first assignment!

Hey Alyse, where did you stay while at PIR? and this is probably a stupid question but how did you dress for the ceremony? I want to make sure I'm respectful, you know? I will only be up there for one night as my son is able to come home we are going to fly back to Tampa Chrismas Eve night. Haven't told the rest of the family, we're going to surprise them!

Jennifer did your son go to Great Lakes too? I have to say that it's been much easier than I thought it would be having my son there. This site is great and when I got that first phone call it made it so much better hear the strength in my son's voice! Seems like both calls came on Saturdays between 3:00 and 4:00 in the afternoon. He says it's really the letters that keep him going. I was able to call his recruiter 2 days after he left to get his mailing address and have been sending cards and letters since. Also, from what Dev tells me there are a lot of guys that don't get mail, which breaks my heart! For Thanksgiving I bought packages of cards at Wal-Mart and put little encouraging notes inside and sent them all to my son in a bigger envelope with a note telling him to hand them out to the guys that really need them. Hoping I don't get in trouble for that but he's already written to me about 2 of his buddies that aren't getting mail so now I've got 3 sailors I'm writing to. Just can't get that whole "Den Mother/Soccer Mom" out of my system I guess LOL!

Big Hugs to you Lobo! My son left for basic on Nov 3rd. Thus far I've gotten one letter and 2 phone calls, he says it's really cold there but he loves the Navy. He said it's way better than he expected so that made my heart happy! Your daughter is going to be just fine and when you get that first call or letter you'll be so happy!

I got great news yesterday! My son Devin will be having PIR on Dec. 24th and he's getting leave! He'll be flying home with me on Christmas Eve and will return to Great Lakes on Jan 3! His A school is at Great Lakes (corpsman) The downside is he probably won't have leave for his older brother's wedding (he was to be the best man) but my heart is sooooo happy that he'll be home with us for Christmas!
