I mailed 2 boxes to the daughter of a friend, using the USPS flat rate boxes - no weight requirement - whatever you can stuff. One was $14 and the smaller $11. The post office will have samples. I mailed pre-packaged beef jerky, dried apricots, nuts, trail mixes, magazines, a book, specialty pita chips - snacks. I mailed them on July 7. She got them on her carrier a few days ago. Her mom said it was a really spirit booster. The sailors love getting stuff from home and they share with each other. On a carrier, they get 15 to 20 minutes each to email periodically (in general). On a sub, it's very very unpredictable. We have not heard from our son for 3 weeks. The longest was 8-9 weeks. I would recommend staying on base during deployment (especially if this is your first time) - you don't know the area yet. It will be lonely w/o others who are going through the same thing. Once you have made friends and know you can live w them, then consider getting an apartment away from the base. I have found several more couples - I'll post their links later. Abby's son and dil are in Chula Vista - seems a number sailors rent there. I can't think of an area to avoid but I'll ask my sister when I get a chance. I always check the crime rates myself.

Hey how is everyone doing? I'm doing pretty good. Just getting started on packing for the move. I am so excited! Bunker, thank you for the suggestions!
I have a couple questions about contact with our sailors while they are on deployment. First, if he has a cell phone and lap top, will he be able to take those things with him for emails and such? Second, when we write letters, usually how long does it take to receive them? Last, what is it like living on base?

Here are the gals I know in San Diego - some are moms, some I have not been in touch with for awhile - they are all my N4M friends:
Rachel.. Proud Navy Wife (from Spring Valley CA)
NaVy*GuRL*(ToNy'sWiFe) from San Diego
ashlo17 from San Diego
RightHereWaiting from San Diego (she is in the Navy too)
These are moms with sailor in San Diego (my friends too).
AbbyBlue form Oklahoma
BBWinthemoon from Ladera Ranch (son a depper)
CAT! from Los Alamitos
tinkerbell lives in San Diego
There are a couple other moms but I sure probably pm them first before I include their names here. I have a big family in SD. When I am down there, I will definitely try to get some people together for a meet and greet.

Hi Annie. We are sorry you missed our very first retreat for young wives, fiancees and girlfriends. Eric's Wife, Proud Navy Wife and Nic'sLittleWife were there along with Sash and Arie - all from the Northern CA area. These wonderful young women were the topic of discussion at the dinner table (4 couples all with Navy boys). We are so proud of you gals. I haven't heard from a few from the San Jose area recently. I know you get pretty busy with work, school and just staying in touch with you LO.

Hey everyone! My husband and i have been married a little over 6 months but have dated over 8 years. I currently live in Northern California. Right now i live with my parents since he is on deployment to save some money while he is away. We were suppose to move to San Diego in June but found out that he was being deployed... so we held off on our move. He is suppose to return in late December, and hopefully we will be able to move then. I hope these 5-6 months pass by fast!

We decided that we want to live in military housing just until I get use to the area. Then we'll think about going to look at apartments around the base. I think that it is better for us to be on base. He deploys sometime in the fall and I would feel safer living on base while he's gone for six months.

Steph, you'll love SD. When I get a chance, I'll post profiles here of N4M friends I have who live in SD and SoCal area. This is a small group but some of us have meet face to face - like the 5 of us who were at the Retreat. You young gals inspired me. Will see you soon.
