My hubby says that the USNS Mercy is definitely having a Tiger Cruise from Hawaii. He said he thinks they can bring up to 2 people. Anyone can go but spouses. If I hear anything different from him, I will let you know. Once he gets onboard in Guam he could find out more.

I have heard of spouses going before; however, they were not suppose to and they were sponsored by someone else. It is not only for parents, it is for kids (but they have to be a certain age), really anyone but spouses or significant others (friends, sisters, or brothers). My hubby just heard from another person that is on the ship right now. She says they are definitely rocking and rolling. She stated that with meds she is fine but they are experiencing 20 foot seas. My hubby says he is glad he is joining in Guam and hopes those seas have subsided by then. I would be freaking out I am sure if I were on there.

Many times they do a Tiger Cruise from the last port back home. I heard my husband say something about it a few days ago; however, I am not sure that he was definite that they were going to do it. I will have him check into it and see if he can find out some definites. Regardless, I can't go because I am a spouse. They do not allow spouses onboard for the cruises. I will see what I can find out and let you all know though.

Yes, thank you, AbbyBlue. It's good to see them underway. By the way, my SIL got a different job due to the certification being out of date for Rescue Swimmer. Instead he will be Deputy Fun Boss. I laughed when I heard it, but the job fits him.

As previously stated, my hubby will join the boat in Guam; however, we live here in SD. We went to take last minute things to the boat last night and he gave us a tour. It is HUGE. In fact, when you are walking around you don't even feel like you are on a ship. The hallways are as wide as they are in hospitals. We did not go for the breakfast this morning since he is joining in Guam, plus it was way to early. Lots of people were bringing items onboard last night; however, I am sure there were LOTS of people bringing things on this morning. I imagine it was pretty hectic down there at the pier and even on the boat with everyone joining for breakfast. They had everything secured really well onboard,(stuff tied down and such) I heard someone say last nite that they are expecting rough seas once they get underway. Hopefully not to rough or everyone will be SICK!

Good Luck to all the Sailors that are departing today!!

He has had many jobs over the years, but for this deployment they needed a (another??)Rescue Swimmer and he was it. I assume he will have other duties, since we hope there will be no one to rescue. I would guess that during the rescue effort after the tsunami a few years ago there probably were several.

When he was assigned on another ship a few years ago we got to go to Family Day. Took a tour of the ship (as much as we were allowed-it was a guided missile destroyer) and went out for a short cruise for the day. Very helpful, if you ever get a chance, to be able to visualize how they live.

Right now they don't even know when he is supposed to be there. Originally he was supposed to be there Apr. 29, but then that has changed. He may be there before the ship sails, or he may have to meet them in Hawaii. Only the Navy knows for sure-HA!

Thanks for the welcome. I'm actually looking for info for myself, since my SIL has been in the Navy for 15 years and is an old hand at this. I am not however. This is only his second deployment since I have known him and am trying to both understand what he's going through and trying to find ways to help my daughter deal with her part. As for being a great MIL-it's easy when you've got a great SIL!

Just joined. Not a Navy mom, but a mom-in-law. My son-in-law has just been assigned to the Mercy and I thought this might be a helpful place to find some info about the deployment as time goes on.
