Cat,
There are 2 hospital ships. The Mercy and the Comfort. They go out once a year (everyother year). Meaning that this year 2010 the Mercy goes and next year the Comfort will go. The usually are gone for 4 to 5 months. I asked my hubby about your BF being in school and being assigned to the Mercy. He did say that he knew of someone that graduates "A" school in mid June and they were being flown to the boast after one week of liberty after graduation. It may be different for your BF, but he said that is a possibility.

AbbyblueOK, that's what i'm hoping for! =)
anyways.. does anyone know, how often does hospital ships, and of course USNS Mercy usually get deployed during year? And for how long? And is there any site i can visit to find out about future deployments or they don't share this information?

I just thought, that as it's not a long deployment, and he will be done only in the middle of June with his school, and then come bach home for 2 weeks.. and i heard USNS Mercy will return in September, so i hope maybe they won't fly him there for 2 months only... well, we'll see... I joined those groups for corpsmen (yes, he is a corpsman), but i basically get all info from him, he is pretty informed.. he got his orders last week, so i think till summer we will know morw about the situation.. i really don't want him to leave that soon :( especially now, when he is stationed in SD, 1.5 hour from me and i haven't really spend time with him since December.. :( I went to graduation and then visited him in A school, but it's still not the same.. anyways, hope for the best prepare for the worst =)

hello everyone. My bf is assigned to USNS Mercy, but he will be in A school till June. So does it mean that he will not be deployed with the ship? I mean they won't fly him to the boat, will they?

Maybe it was a different picnic. But yes, the one we went to was for the USNS Mercy Pre-Deployment Picnic and it was in SD. Private message me your son's name if you want to. I am eager to see if him and my husband come into contact with each other. I can tell you that ship is HUGE and it doesn't seem strange to not meet people that are on there with you for months. So, is he stationed at Camp Pendleton? My hubby is at the Naval Medical Center in SD.

Hello Gloria and Becky. I saw the post on facebook's page for Pacific Partnership 2010. I am not a Navy Mom; however, I am a Navy Wife. My husband will be deploying with the USNS Mercy. He will not be leaving with the Mercy but will be flown to the boat a few weeks out. I see your son is a Corpsman. My husband was a Corpsman for almost 9 years. He completed his degree and got comissioned. He will be one of the Officer's in charge of the Lab on the ship (mainly the Blood Bank Department). As for not knowing too much, that is the Navy. We have been in for almost 11 years now and it has always been tht way for us. LOL.

We (my hubby, me, and our children) went to the Pre-deployment Picnic this past weekend at Admiral Baker. It was nice. Since people are coming to the ship from ALL over, there did not seem to be too many people there that knew each other. Glad to meet you both and I look forward to sharing this experience together over the internet and this site. Good Luck to ALL our sailors on the USNS Mercy!!
