I also want to overnight a midway bag/box and calendar squares, but do not have the address.  I just found out about this opportunity.  Please let me know... I would be heartbroken if my son was to miss out on having something to open at the midway point (my sister is retired navy and worked closey with submariners so she has filled me in on the importance of midway night!!)  Thanks so much!!  PS. Unless I can get the info from my sister, I also need the specs on how much/diameter of box/bag for midway stuff.  I will check out the info above too... I guess I could have done that first... I'm just excited!  :)

usually .avi or .wmv works best, as long as you can see it... and that's weird cause our videographer uses a flip... the audio was great, just all black.. if it were me it would be cause I forgot to take the lens cover off... But I'm sure you are waaay smarter than me :D

Thank you for the update. I wasn't able to send over the video we did (I couldn't get it to attach).

Our mail drops are consistently a gallon size ziplock bag. It has to close independently, ie: no duct taping it shut cause it's stuffed too full.

I send an sd card with fresh pictures for my husband, he has a digital picture frame that he can view them on. I use smilebox.com to create scrapbook pages that slide into a photobook I send out with him. There are a lot of great ideas for things to send, decorated pillowcases are another idea. I'm happy to help any way I can!

The deadline for videos got changed. :D sorry we didn't get that out. If we can please have them by the 18th we should be fine.

The Alabama is not slated to get females any time soon. It's not something that I'm even concerned about happening on this boat for the duration of our stay on it. and he has a few years here.

As far as phones, there are not usually phone calls. Sailor mail is unreliable and your best method of contact with them. There will be black out periods. Generally they can continue to receive even when they aren't sending, so keep writing regardless, they live for those emails.

The website does not require fb to see, the option is their to use fb as a log on method for ease, but you can create a separate webs id to log on with. We try to put as much info in both places as possible.

I have never heard of anyone having to hotrack on a boomer my husband was on. They don't make port calls anymore. It was deemed an unnecessary security risk. I send jerky, granola bars, drink mixes, candy.

Halfway boxes are boxes put together to be opened by the sailor midway through patrol. you send it with your sailor and count on them not opening them early. I have a friend who writes her husband notes for every single day he will be gone. She picks up cheap random cards and writes notes on them. He enjoys that.

You also have the option of decorating a 8.5 x 11 sheet of paper any way you want and sending it to us (we do ask a $1 donation per sheet of paper) you would put your sailors name on the front and a date on the back and it will be hung on the mess deck on the day you chose, we call them calendar squares.

We are getting a P.O. box very soon, I will post that asap.

Kendra, I'm verifying you with our ombudsmen, as soon as I am able I will send you the FRG welcome information. :D We are glad to have you aboard, if you have any questions I missed, or anything else I can help you with, please don't hesitate to ask :D

Hello, I know that I do not post very often, but I want to thank everyone for the wonderful information.  My son reported last week to the gold crew and he has not forwarded any information to us. We did not know anything about the video so we will do this today and get it sent so that hopefully he will get it.  Thank you again.

Just an idea:

For one of my kid's videos, I gave him a tour of the contents of the pantry and the fridge/freezer (quote) "since THAT was what he REALLY wanted to see!" k.

1)  Bama will not have a female officer this year - no announcements re: next year though.

2)  There's not much hot-racking because Bama is a boomer, not a fast attack (see the blog post on my page re: the differences between the two).  However, new crew who aren't qualified yet (don't have dolphins), sleep in whatever rack the older crew tells them too - and that might change frequently.

3)  Since the Bama doesn't make ports of call, there's no reason to take any civilian clothing on a cruise.

4)  He needs to check with his COB re: his iPhone... depending on his job, he may not be allowed a phone which has a camera and/or internet access.

5)  Bama is berthed in Bangor... all her cruises start and end there.

6)  Mostly, what we shouldn't discuss here is anything which would allow someone to figure out when the sub is leaving from or returning to port, or anything specific about their mission (what they're carrying or what they'll be doing).

Asking questions is what we're here for!  k.
