OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

As for the patterns that they do; they have to do them, and have been doing that for many years. I know in WW II the ships ran in a zig zag pattern. Just a war game thing so the enemy will not find them. As for the animal head it might have been left in Washington state. The boat was in Washington state and they sent it to VA for refitting and it was sent to GA in 2009. The only reason that I know this is my son got there a couple of months after it got to GA. As for the emails I am going to have to ask my son next time I see him why that is that they can get email but can't send email. I don't think we will get a hi mom on Mothers day but it would be nice. Just remember when ever you see a guy on TV it is always his mom he says hi too. I always told my dad I would tell him hi if I was ever on TV.

Comment by karinabeana611 on May 11, 2013 at 12:07pm: It cracked me up reading about them doing donuts and figure eights! haha :) I suppose they don't have quite the turning radius that a racecar would have :) I saw the article about the animal head as well--I wonder where they have it. I think the best way I can think of the lack of communication is "no news is good news" :) I wonder if they can get any emails that we send them during times they don't send them back...

The sub was in Washington state before it came to GA I wonder if it is still there. Hope everyone has a great mothers day. I think I just might grill me some steaks.

Lex Patten donated 100-pound shoulder mount to Navy’s newest warship

From this week’s odd news file comes the story of a moose head shoulder mount that was donated to … the USS Anchorage?

Yep, a hunter’s trophy mount will hang somewhere aboard the Navy’s newest warship, an amphibious transport dock that was to depart Alaska this week after a commissioning ceremony.

According to the Anchorage Daily News, it was a gift from Anchorage resident Lex Patten in honor of his late father, Allen, a World War II Navy veteran who survived the attack on Pearl Harbor. Allen retired from the Navy and moved to Alaska in 1962. He died in 2004.

“It was the last moose hunt I went on with my dad,” Patten told the Anchorage Daily News. “He insisted on packing out the antlers, about a mile, and he did. He was 73 at the time.”

Patten shot the moose while hunting in Alaska in 1990.

The bull moose rack measures 64.5 inches and weighs about 100 pounds. Patten wasn’t sure where the moose head would be put on display aboard the USS Anchorage, which oddly enough has accepted several other wild animal trophies as gifts.

“But the captain is quite an outdoorsman,” Patten told the Daily News. “I guess he has a plan for where to put it where it will be seen by anyone visiting the ship.”

This wasn’t the first time Patten has donated a hunter’s trophy mount to the Navy. According to the Daily News, he also donated a Dall sheep shoulder mount to the submarine USS Alaska during its commissioning in 1986.

Comment by NavyMomLG on May 9, 2013 at 10:26am: Kathy - my son refers to it as Nascar in the Ocean! He must have heard that from someone else because we have never watched car racing on any level in our family. But I think both donuts and Nascar paint a pretty clear picture of what they are doing!

My tell me that all they do is donuts in the ocean meaning that all they do is kind of drive the boat in circles all day and night. So no telling were they are at in the ocean, but we do know that they are in the ocean. lol

Comment by Kathy on May 6, 2013 at 2:42pm: A Sea Service Ribbon is a medal that they get for doing over 90 days out at sea, and yes it is worn on your left side over your hear. Most all medals are worn on the left side over the heart.
