Another question for you experienced moms - do your sons bother with putting their cell phone plans and car insurance on "deployment hold" for the three months they are out?  I think it is common for sailors on surface boats and fast attack subs because they are out for much longer periods of time.

Kathy and Suan, Kings Bay is a nice place my sons really likes it there. There are alot of hotels near I-95 at exit 3 too, and lots of places to eat. We stayed at the Navy Lodge one time near the housing area, kind of away from everything, but for the price you cant beat that. The rooms are really spacious with a kitchenette. Still no word from my son, just praying for him and all of the other guys on the boat.

There are two hotels on base one is near the barracks, and your has to stay in the room but my son never real does.  The other on you can get to in from off base because it is near the housing area and they don't have to stay with you.  The rooms cost about 50 a night.  To get on base you are going to have a pass for the front pass office.  Your son will have to meet you at the front gate to get you in, there are areas on the base that you can not go in, but you stay at the front of the base you will be ok.  Jacksonville, FL is about 30 min. away.  I have been there two many time to count, I live near Orlando, FL. which is about 3 to 4 hour drive depending on how many times I have to stop to go to the bathroom. lol  I will be going there in July to pick up my son for the last time, because he will be leaving for his next duty.

Donna, it was a very short email ... just enough to let us know he's doing fine. We'll see if/when we hear from him again. :-) I hope your son will have a chance to check in with you soon!
Kathy, our son is a machinist mate. And, no, we've not been to Kings Bay yet but feel sure we'll end up visiting sometime over the next few years. Coming from TN.

If yall don't hear for your sons right away don't worry.  These guys work I think on 18 hour shifts and the time that they do have is spent trying to get there dolphins.  Hopefully they get them this time out.  My son's last time out I think he emailed me 4 times, because he was so busy.  This is his late patrol out with the boat, he will be reporting to Pearl Harbor at the end of Aug. for shore duty.

Susan, you heard from your son? that is wonderful, I hope to hear from mine soon.

All I can say or know is that they will probably out there for about 3 month.  They did 104 day your year.  What is your sons rating my son is a ET which is Radioman.  My son likes all of his Chiefs and officers.  When he first came on the boat in 2009 there was a Chief that was a pain, and rode him the whole time.  Thank god he has retired and is no longer on the boat.  Were would yall be coming from, and have yall ever been to Kings Bay.

Kathy, thanks for all the info you've shared. I'm sure I'll have more questions as we continue down this path our son has taken. :-) I'm very happy to report that we've received our first words from him! Very complimentary of the sailors he's met so far. Thanks to your son and others who've made this a distinguished crew. Looking forward (and the reason for my ombudsman question), is it possible to find out a time window when they'll return so we can try to be in the area?
