My son will be a rider on the Alaska to get his gualifications, this is all new to me, in the last few days before he leaves will he have any liberty if we go visit him?

You're welcome NavyMomLG... my first one I was a wreck.. but I am (somewhat) more at ease when he goes out. Having support on here helps too since we all are going through the same stuff.. Have a wonderful day!

Thank you both for your comments.  This was my first underway so I am anxious to hear from my son to see how it went!

Navy Mom LG, my son came home yesterday (YEAH) and he said most of them have to get a PO Box.

Hi Navy Mom LG... haven't been on in a while.. work is just super busy.. not sure if your questions were answered. I am not exactly sure how the mail works for the sailors in barracks. My son still gets his mail at home (only 45 mins away!) but he did have a friend that his parents sent his boxes to our house. Not sure if it was a trust issue with leaving a box outside the barracks or no mail delivery. Someone else might know specifics on that. My son gave my information to the Ombudsman (since he is single) but I have never been contacted, usually anything going on I find out after the fact and from my son. I am sorry if I can't give you better information, maybe someone else can weigh in on this and help us both!

Hi again.  My son has been in GA for about a month now.  He sounds like he is settling in.  I was hoping I could ask a couple of questions.  How often, if ever, do you hear from the Ombudsman? Is there a general mailing address for the sailors living on base or is it specific to the building they or in, or their sub or something? Finally, if I send a package to the base, do they have personal mail boxes or is it a general mail room like they had during school?  I have been getting my son's mail and have asked for his address, but he hasn't been able to tell me so I thought maybe someone here may know.  It isn't all that important to him right now and he has been busy so I'm sure he won't make any extra effort to find out for awhile. By the way, he is Blue crew.

Hi NavyMom... he did get to come home every weekend when they didn't 'have' the boat ..his wording.. Now he has duty every 3 days so he comes home maybe one day on the weekend.. But I can take the days when I can.. his brother (twin) is also Navy but is in Japan :(  and it will be three years before I will get to see him.. Have a wonderful weekend

Thanks danagagirl! How great for you that your son is so close.  When they are not out with the boat, do they have a more typical work week with weekends or do they maintain a similar schedule to what they have at sea?
