Has anyone heard from their son (or Submariner....in case, not a mom) lately? The last letter I received from my son was on Thanksgiving. I was hoping someone would have some info they could share on how our submariners were doing.  I would appreciate any information anyone would like to share.

*Janlee,In regards to your last post;I believe you misunderstood what I wrote.

 I mentioned to contact the Ombudsman in regards to sending care packages, so that she/he could possibly give some more useful ideas on what to send. Plus, the Ombudsman would tell you what is not allowed on the boat.

Sorry for the mix up.

rebecca...i was talking with my DIL and she said her and some other wives were getting together last night to fill and decorate their packages..:)) then she said i was the deadline. Now im HOPING that since i am in a another state (PA)...that mine still arrives on time. I mailed mine this morning and the woman at the PO said it should be fine...but ive heard that before..lol. And Thank YOU for posting to the link for all to see what we can and cannot send our Sailors. Everything i put in my sons package was on the list, so i feel good about it..;) And i also noticed that it mentioned (if i read it right) that if the package does not make it in time...the Obudsman will take it upon herself to review the content label to see if its worth re-sending to the next port (if nothing is spoiled, etc..)...so im hoping he eventually gets one out of the two..:)

Janlee- Thank you for the heads up! (on sending the packages by the 3rd, so it will arrive on time) I don't know how I missed reading your post yesterday....but, thank you again for the very useful information.

Just wondering, How did you find out about the deadline?

Thank you for the best wishes Janlee and Ginny. I wish you two the best of luck also!! I hope all our package arrive safetly and promptly to their destination....and into our sons' arms!

I will like add on to Janlee's great suggestions on what to send in care packages. I posted this message on another site, but I believe it would be of use here too. Here it is as follows;

Here's a link that might help you get ideas to on what to send in your care package(and it is full of useful information).

http://www.navyformoms.com/group/submoms/page/halfway-boxes-mail-drops

I found this link under the group Sub Moms. To the right of the comment boxes, underneath the list of members are a few different topics you can get information on. The link I gave you is listed as *Halfway Boxes &Mail Drops.

In addition, I was advised that when sending care packages reduce the amount of 'trash'.( For example,packing peanuts or packing material).. The reason being that it will end up in the ocean. So,try optimize the space in your care package..instead of using packing peanuts, use tootsie rolls or jaw breakers. Lastly, since our Submariners have little storage room, try to send some practical items. Lastly, get in touch with your sons' boat's Ombudsman. She/he will most likely give you more helpful ideas on what to send. Plus, the Ombudsman will tell you what is not allowed on the boat(for example; alcohol).

P.S.

From what I've been told sending baked goods or special treats that remind our sons of home are Golden! When sending baked goods or goodies just make sure to individually bag items. That way if one thing is ruined for some reason (either by going bad/spoiling, or damaged during shipping) then the rest of the items will remain safe.    - I hope you all  find this helpful =)

you and me both rebecca...i have such bad luck with care packages. And Ginny...i sent food, greeting cards, pics (not many), playing cards, puzzle book, movies, books, travel pillow..a bunch of stuff. i know space is limited, but they find room...lol.. My sons wife has sent him box sets of movies (if your son has a laptop,,,they can watch them)...games (BattleShip, 21 questions, Uno, Dice...etc)...i know for sure they have PS3, Nintendo, Wii, and a few other game consoles on there, so you can ship games for those. I guess they hold tournaments on those things. Anything to help pass the time...:) I am getting ready to tape my box up now...:)) Keep your fingers crossed!

Positive thought indeed Holly!..and just a heads-up...i was just informed that all packages should be sent by tomorrow (the 3rd) to insure that they arrive to our sons in time. My last one never made it...but it never came back to me either, so im hoping it catches up with him this time around. I mailed it one day after my DIL mailed hers..and he received hers but not mine. im hoping it wasnt stolen. So upsetting. He asked for some games. he said all they had on there to play was Cribbage and he wasnt interested, so i sent him Yahtzee and he never got it!!!..ughhhhh im so mad when i think about it...lol..not to mention the 50 other things i had in there!

Holly..you have two sons in the Navy. oh my gosh!..and 9 months??!!...I hope the Alexandria is on schedule for its 6 months because my son and his wife have a whole wedding planned just a few weeks after their scheduled return. In the Bahamas!!!...they were married last April in a 5 minute ceremony on the beach near Groton, but he promised her a 'real' wedding' when he returns, so shes (weve) been planning this whole time. PLEASE dont let them stay out any longer than scheduled!...lol
