Congrats Karyn! That is awesome!! I would love for my sailor to make a career out of the Navy!! Of course after only being in 1 1/2 years - it's too early to tell!

Whoo Hoo...my son reenlisted for another 6 years. That will put him out to 17 years. I think he is a lifer! Proud of my sailor.

Holly - Congrats on your youngest son finishing bootcamp! It is neat that they will both be at Groton - for awhile anyway. I was just curious did your son that is assigned to the Alex - ever have a PO Box on base while he was in B.E.S.S. or the other schools? My son just kept his same PO Box from day one - even after he moved into the boat barracks. Makes live easier for me anyway. haha

Sorry I can't answer that question either. I have the boat address which I use when he is deployed. But he also has a home and a wife in CT so that is the address I use when he is not gone. Wish I could be more of a help.

Hi Holly, not sure on that - a more veteran mom or wife will have to step in here. I know my son who is of course on the boat and has been gone the entire time with them still has his PO Box. We do have a ship address - that we can send to you - but if he isn't on the boat that won't do any good. So that is a good question for Amanda, Janice or Karyn. Have you mailed him anything since he has been at Groton? Because my son's address didn't change since he first got to Groton. We just have a FPO address for while they are gone - to catch up to them at ports.

haha Janice that is great! August is our County Fair! And Brandon loves it - Figure 8 races, demo derby, etc... I tell ya' he is a down home country boy all around. Would love to have your son visit us!! I hope Brandon is surprised. I think he will be since we just spent money on booking a cruise and right before Christmas - I don't think he will expect us to come out for homecoming!

Got mine too but then spent the conversation typing on SKYPE as video bandwith was messed up. I hated it as I had some more bad news for him. He lost is uncle earlier in the deployment (which he knew already) but he lost a close family friend a few days ago. This was his babysitter's husband. Jimmy was like a little brother in the family. Only had one baby sitter his entire childhood while I worked. He took it well. Then had to tell him his other uncle was hospitalized and had surgery too. When it rains it poors. We also talked about his trip home to California and then up to Washington. Excited.

If I understand stand down right - they are actually off - except when they have duty right? I hope he doesn't have to work Christmas day or Homecoming either. My son said that he put in for second half so the married/family guys could have the holidays - he is pretty sure he'll have duty on Christmas since he won't be going anywhere and is single. I hope it works out of you!

Amanda - I have a question. If they have duty/have to work on homecoming do they actually get to get off the boat and at least greet and see their family for a little bit. I have this feeling that my son with probably offer to take duty since he doesn't know he will have anyone there for him. We are prepared for that - we will just do sight seeing and see him the next day - but was just wondering how that worked.
