Welcome Lizzy! Is your friend being flown over to join the boat while it is deployed?
This is my son's first deployment too - so we are still learning to deal with this too. We get emails probably 2 or 3 times a week. A email generally takes 24 hours (or longer if they aren't where the emails goes out and comes in on a regular bases)
Email is the best way and really only way to communicate unless they are ported. There is no set schedule that WE are told of for ports. But when they are in ports they can call and skype often - and they can be in port from a day or two up to 2 or 3 weeks - depending. We are given very little information and can talk about very little about their schedule and where they are since what they do is secured information. It is tough, especially when they are away on birthdays, holidays, etc... Oh you can also send care packages, that always helps them too. Since they are on the down hill side of the deployment now things will seem to move quicker and they will be home soon.

Linda - My son is also a MM - he is new to the Alex too, He just joined them after he completed his A school in March. So this is his first deployment and first even underway. You are fortunate to live close to get to see him often - We live in Kansas - so we usually have to wait till he gets some sort of leave.

Thanks for all the Welcomes!
Gail, My son is a MMFN and is receiving his inoculations at present. Awaiting in Groton. Since we live in RI, we are so very fortunate to have the pleasure of his company on weekends.

Welcome Linda! Gail, My Son celebrated his birthday at sea about a month ago - I know they do bake them a birthday cake. This was his second birthday away from home - last year he was in boot camp. He said this year was alot better than last year! haha. This year - I didn't cry all day like I did last year! haha

Hello Everyone, I'm new to this group, as my son has just been assigned to the Alex. He awaits in Groton. Interested in helping out with the cookbook fundraiser. Are there any guidelines as to the recipes? Amanda, do I just email them to you?
