Hello, I'm new to this group.  My son Jordan is on the USS Cowpens. This is his first deployment. I'm looking forward to getting to know all of you.

The group owner needs to edit the name.

Hi ladies, please make sure to read the following from our Community Guidelines. It is VERY important to follow OPSEC.

• Don’t Jeopardize the Safety of Our Sailors: Remember OPSEC (Operational Security)
(Don’t Sink Ships With Loose Lips)

This site and all content posted on it are viewable to everyone on the Internet. This doesn’t mean you can’t share things about your Sailor – but too many details can put Sailors in harm’s way.

The following are examples of red flags and should not be shared within this community either by posting or sending via a Group message:
• Sailors’ last names. This includes your username if you share the same last name as your son or daughter. If you scan in a picture of an article that contains your Sailor’s last name, make sure to black it out first. If it is an online Navy article or news article that you are reposting, do not publicly identify the mentioned Sailor as your son or daughter.
• No Sailor addresses, emails, or other contact information. The exception to this rule is FPO addresses.
• Specific dates, times, and locations regarding current or future deployments and ship movements. Do not post dates more specific than by month. Do not post specific ports of call, deployment bases, or future destinations.
• Details regarding training, equipment, and current or future operations or missions. (But Boot Camp is okay.)
• Names or numbers of the Recruit Training Command staff.
• Ways to cheat the system. Navy will see it as a breach of security when you share things like how to bend the rules. We don’t want to jeopardize the safety of our Sailors.

INCORRECT:
My Sailor is in XYZ unit and is stationed at ABC camp in XXX city in Iraq.
My daughter is aboard the XYZ ship heading to ABC city/country in X days.
They will be coming back on X date from XXX city.

CORRECT:
My Sailor is deployed in Iraq.
My son is aboard the Stennis.
They will be coming back sometime in May.

When in doubt, less is better.

Mary D, I've only sent 1 package & 1 card so far. My son has only been there since November. The care package that I sent just before Christmas took right around 3 weeks. However, I recently sent a card with a check & gift card inside (sent around Jan. 1st I think) and my son tells me he hasn't received that yet. I didn't think a card would take as long as the care packages do so I'm a bit concerned about why he hasn't received it yet. Now I need to send a care package again, and I'm a little bit worried with the changing of the ships and all about sending it. Guess I'll go ahead and hope for the best.

Thanks all. I did contact the ombudsman on each of the ships and have gotten no answer. I guess I'll send it to the Antietam. If they swap hulls, it may take the package that long to get there. Just seems like there is a lot of opportunity for mail confusion with this situation. Ha!!

My son will be transferring to the Antietam once they arrive in Japan. I've got a care package I need to send him and am unsure to which ship I should send it. He's telling me to look up the address for the USS Antietam and send it to that address, but I'm wondering if that address will stay the same or will it change? Does anyone know?  Thanks.

My apologies for intruding and if you know about this already. I found this Facebook Group for the USS Antietam. Thought it was worth repeating.

https://www.facebook.com/USSAntietam/info

It does not appear to be a private/closed group (in which case membership must be approved by group admin). Be sure to click "About" because it has the phone number for the ombudsman for the group. If there is a private group, she will inform you and will be the one to approve your request to join. Be sure your sailor has given the ombudsman all the contact info.

My son's submarine has a private FRG - it was all very hush, hush. As soon as my son left the boat, I was deleted from the group. Ya, they take it pretty seriously.

Always A Mom, My son is switching from Cowpens to Antietam but my question for you is about the newsletters? My son has only been in Yokosuka since early November but I haven't seen any newsletters. Am I missing something? Don't want to miss out on anything! (My son doesn't tell me much) HA!!

Comment by Mike's Mom (S-PACT/Yokosuka,JP) on January 5, 2013 at 1:42pm
Are we going to swap groups? My son is in Yoko on the Cowpens and will stay with the Antietam after the swap.
