welcome, myersboy!  my son is currently serving on the BHR, he, too started on the Essex.  my son is not much of a talker, either, i love the time he does email or skypes, or fb, or whatever!

these ladies, current and alumni, are WONDERFUL!!!  i love them all!

marianne, thank you for sharing.  katie is doing some pretty cool stuff!

Thank you all.  I am so relieved to hear that we can still communicate.  That was my biggest fear.

From my experience over the 3 years that Katie was on the USS Essex/USS Bonhomme Richard, I can only remember 1 time in particular that communication was cut by the Captain.  That was around the time of the Tsunami aid....when they left in a hurry from Malaysia to aid the Japanese.  Other than that, the sailors have access to computers for emailing via their navy.mil acct while at sea.  We heard pretty regularly from Katie.

We sent her packages regularly along with emails, etc.

Myersboy, have you contact the Ombudsman so you can get any updates and communications? There probably is an official FB page.  They ship is part of the 7th fleet, and there's a website for them as well.

Maybe some of the other ladies that currently have sailors on the ship have some other ideas as well.

My son is a fairly new MM. He trained in San Diego and arrived in Japan in July.  He doesn't communicate much with us so I need to know what questions I should be asking before he is deployed.  He sent an email with some details.  My main question is how much communication is there?  Should I brace myself for no contact, once a week, once a month?  This is so new to me.

Myersboy, you are in the right place if your sailor is assigned to the USS Bonhomme Richard.  For the Talisman Saber, no ship goes alone, it will be a group from the 7th fleet that participate in the international exercise.

I'm an alumni from this group as my daughter Katie was in Sasebo from Apr 2009 to May 2012.  The USS Essex went to Australia the first year she was there, but the next time the ship had issues and they weren't able to participate.  That was before the hull swap with the USS Bonhomme RIchard.

What is your son's rate and when did he arrive in Sasebo?

Hello, I'm new here and not sure if I'm at the right place.  My son is stationed in Sasebo and will be deployed for the 1st time in June for the Talisman Saber exercise in Australia.  Did I find the right group?  I am very nervous and have so many questions about deployment.
