Hello All - I'm new to this page and to this group and thought I should tell you all a bit about myself. I have 3 kids. My oldest son, a Marine. My middle child (another boy) is my Sailor. He's an…Continue

Hi sailormom! Glad to hear that your son is getting settled and doing well. Getting adjusted to Navy life is hard enough. Sounds like his HT job is a good one, I bet he's anxious to get started. As for transportation, my oldest son didn't have a car the first couple of years there. It is rather hard to get around, but it can be done. He got lots of good exercise walking everywhere. Is he good at finding his way around a new city? can he pay for insurance/gas, etc? There is a place to park while they're out at sea, so that's not a problem. Funny how he's now thinking he needs a truck! My second son drove his truck from Texas right after his time in Florida, before starting in San Diego. It was a 22 hour drive and he did it all in one stretch! He was so excited and motivated to get there he didn't want to stop! I think they reimburse you for gas/travel expenses. Maybe he could get his car on his next trip home and drive back? just an idea.
Good evening everyone. Well my son moved in to his room yesturday, and he's glad that his phone and laptop have a signal. I talked to him today and he was still getting settled in, doing laundry and putting things up.
Jane- your right HT is Hull Tech and he will do welding, brazing, saudering and plumbing which are good skills to know for the outside world.
You are right things are very different because of dry dock, my son told me that he started IN dock today I think thats kinda like an orientation, and he will be doing that for the next 3 weeks.
The next thing is transportation: Should he get a car?? Should we ship his car from home?? We definitely think he needs something to move around in. . He's got this idea that he should get a truck,(he's always wanted a truck) all of a sudden his car back home is no longer good enough..lol
OK, what is HT? How great that your 2 sailors are close to each other and both somewhat new! and yes, the beautiful San Diego weather! It makes some of the more difficult days easier, I'm sure.
Sailormom, welcome abourd! I have been so m\busy with school, that I haven't had a chance to log on. I am sorry to hear that your son is haveing a hard time with his housing. When my son first got there, he lived on the ship. Once they came back from Hawaii, he came back to Texas and got married. That was such a hard time for him. His wife had just moved to the US from Brazil, didn't know much English and Richard had to leave the day after the wedding. Once he got back, he applied for married housing. After four weeks, she left here and flew out to San Diego. They stayed in a hotel on base. They finally got housing!
I think it took a total of six weeks to get a place to live. My son is a CS (Culunary Specialst). Since the galley is closed, he spends his days sweeping the decks. He said that he will be back in the bakery sometime in late spring, early summer.
Jane, I am glad to hear that your son is enjoying his life so far on the BHR. I'm making plans to go and visit this summer.
