Yes, I think duty is every 10 days.  My son had to work New Year's eve.  He wasn't too happy about it either.  About the $59 flights, right now SW is having a special.  My second son (got out of the Navy with early separation, was on the Makin Island) is expecting his first child next month and I'd love to be able to get one of those cheap tickets, but since it's going to be a last minute reservation it won't be cheap.   The prices just keep going up!

Wow!! $59.00!!! From Dallas, the tickets are in the neighborhood of $200.00 each way.
I know that since the BHR has been in dry dock, my son is working normal hours. He goes in early and leave early. When on the ship, he works odd hours. He works as a baker. He has to be there early to start baking bread. He has also worked late preparing for the next day as well. I think his wife likes his dry dock hours. From what I hear, the duty rotation is every ten days.

Welcome Mrs. B!  How nice that your husband is also a MM and can help Jane's son.  My son is in IT.  Your husband gets off at 12:30?  I think my son works into mid afternoon, but still...that's not bad.  You say they won't be going anywhere until next year?  That's great news, considering that, up until Aug, they were gone almost one whole year!

Jane, my son has a car there. He got it just over a year ago but before that he walked everywhere or just didn't go out. So a car is nice to have. It's been safe so far and when they are out on deployment there is a designated place for them to park their cars.  As for housing, I bet he'll be in the barracks.  My son is now in different housing, but before that he always lived on the ship or the barracks.  Since your son got his orders, I'm assuming he did well on the testing??  Ok, I'm officially jealous, $59 flights to SD is a deal! :)

My hubby is an MM on the BHR...I'm sure, Jane, that your son and my hubby will get to know eachother. My hubby said the ship is chill and everyone is pretty relaxed on there, so that's good. I still don't like the Navy much, but I've never been good with the military, since I come from a military family...I have someone in every branch of the Navy...and have lost a few friends and one family member since the war in Iraq and Afghanistan. Fortunately, our guys will NEVER be that close to the war!!! YAY! The BHR has a GREAT schedule. My hubby gets off at 12:30 every day! :) And they'll be in dry dock for a long time, plus the fact that they won't be going anywhere until next year. :)

Jane, I am glad to hear that it's official!!
As for living arrangments, I don't know where the barracks are. My son use to live on the ship, but moved out back in August when he got married. I'll ask.
As far as a car, yes, he will want one. My son does not have one, and nothing is in walking distance. He is saving his money for one. All he has to do is make sure it is registered with the based.

Yes, it was great.  I must say I haven't looked at the BHR fb page much, life has been so busy.  But I see now it's a great source for keeping up with the ship.  By the way Jane, I sent you an email....check it out when you have time.

Hope both of you have a good week!

I love looking at the pictures and videos that the BHR posts on Facebook!! I loved following it during Rimpac. I feel that it helps me stay connected to Richard more.

I couldn't use the link you put here, my computer genius son couldn't connect to it and said it could have a virus, but I checked it out on the BHR FB page.  very cool!  thanks for bringing it to my attention!

Yes, it's so impressive to see them in their uniforms!  Margaret, I'm glad you had both your sons at home for the holidays!  I take lots of pictures as well.  My sons are very patient while I take lots of pix so I can look at them on my digital frame when they're gone.  And if your sons are like mine, their time here is too short!  So many people to see, so little time.  My oldest son was here 2 weeks and it flew by...not sure when he'll be home again though.  I'm glad you both had a nice Christmas with your families and have a Happy New Year!

Jane, I am so glad you are enjoying your time with your sailor. Both of my boys wore their dress blues to Midnight Mass. They looked so good!!!
I understand about handing them over to friends. I have Learned through the past year that they miss their friends at home just as much. I let them know that as long as I get my time, I can share. It was sad to send them back, but I am thankful that both were home and I was able to get pictures.
I hope everyone has a safe New Year!
