Hi, just found this page but my son has been on chicago for about 4? months. Miss him like crazy and kind of went into communication withdrawal while they were under way the last time, but very proud of him.

Thank you Proudmama for the information and pictures of the fish pin. (What's the difference between the gold and silver?) It represents quite an accomplishment and you must be very proud of your son. Is it an acceptable question to ask how long the sub will be out? I think my son and another recent Nuke training graduate will be sent to the last port of call and then be on board for the next leg. I am a total newbie to all things military, so please advise if I am inappropriate.

Fish or Dolphin Pin:

Enlisted Sailors and Naval Officers wear the uniform breast pin to indicate that they are qualified in submarines. The Submarines insignia is considered one of the Navy's three major enlisted warfare pins, along with the Surface Warfare Badge and the Enlisted Aviation Warfare Specialist insignia. To earn the right to wear "fish", prospective submariners complete an extensive qualification process that lasts about one year (for both enlisted and officers, though the two programs differ significantly) and covers virtually all of the submarine's systems. Once an enlisted sailor has earned the right to wear the "dolphins", (SS) is added after his rate of rank that stands for "submarine specialist".

My son has just arrived in Guam. Not sure what he is doing as the boat is not in port. I am totally not familiar with the Navy or other military. What is a fish pin?

Hello all.  New to this group.  My son has been on the USS Chicago for about a year but just qualified for his fish pin around July 6.  I know he is very happy but we have not talked to him much since they are not in port.

My son is currently home on leave before his first assignment. He will leave for Guam in July and is looking forward to this next step in his time with the Navy. In scrolling through previous entries, I saw a comment referring to a SubMoms page, where would I locate that?

My son is in the Chicago since 2 years. I am a proud mother of my son because being in a submarine for long time is not easy, but he is doing good making friends and enjoying the island.

Thank you BillysMom for your response and information. Will certainly be checking in on the local phone. Glad to hear your son is enjoying Guam. I think mine will too.

Also, the USS Chicago has a FB page, check it out.  They are very good about posting pics from special events and ceremonies.

Hi twp,

Our son has been on the USS Chicago for 2 1/2 years.  The biggest adjustment was the time difference.  I have Guam time on my phone, so I don't call him in the middle of the night.  My husband and I both have facebook accounts so we can all leave messages and photos for each other.  It can take 2 weeks to a month for packages to arrive, so plan ahead for special occasions.  It's a long way from home, so we try to stay in touch as much as possible when they are  in Guam.  He loves the island, though, and spends lots of time in the water, diving, fishing, etc.  He also got a local phone, much cheaper than his US mainland plan.  Luckily our calling plan includes Guam. Check out the phone availability as it can get expensive.  No doubt, there is adventure ahead for your sailor!  Goodluck!
