OK, just had to share this one. Our son is reporting to the Cowpens soon. My husband's ex-boss (he's retired now) called when she saw our son's pics on FB. Her son served on the ship 10 years ago when he was in the navy!

Isn't PIR fun?  I would love to go again. I have family in the area so we had the best of both worlds when we were there.  That computer will come in handy in the future.  Skype is a Godsend.

We are going the first of December.  I cannot wait!!!!  I'm nervous but anxious.  He has lots of plans for us.  I will keep in touch.  Hopefully I'll have some good tips for you =)

Sorry to take so long in replying! We went to GL for PIR. Turns out I was chief planner, navigator, and driver! I,ve been up late and little sleep past 4 days. PIR was great. Our sailor is happy and looking forward to Japan. We went with him to pick out a new laptop. He currently has a coffin rack so he measured to be sure the computer would fit. I know the first long stretch is going to be really tough, but we are hoping to get to Japan for a visit in spring 2014 if he is still there. Please keep in touch about your trip! When are you going? You'll have to tell me all about it!

Mikey's Mom - how are you doing?  Are you doing ok with him going to Japan?  Reason I ask is because I seriously lost it when mine got his orders.  I did not expect to react like that but I did.  He was home for 4 weeks before he went over and I was good for the first 2, but the last 2 I was not.  He knows me so he expected it ;)  but it was difficult.  The first 9 months were tough, but now that he's been home on leave it's much better.  Now it's just how things are.  My mom and I are going to see him soon.  I can't wait!!!!!

There's a pic on Navy.mil also of the Cowpens shooting a rocket/missile.  I sent him an email and he said they were doing drills.  He said you hear it through the entire ship when they shoot.  They're doing their thing up top and the rest of the ship is business as usual.  I asked how you sleep during that, and he said is sleeping habits have changed considerably.

This is what he said "Its odd tho, all you have to do is say my
name around me when I'm  asleep and I'm up like right now. We all do that.
You can touch someone or hit their bed and they don't move but if you
say their name they could solve an algebra question in 2 seconds."

Cracks me up!

New pics on the FB page. Looks like they're keeping busy.

I did not know that - probably because he already had one.  You learn something new every day!!!! =)

Robin, your sailor went to Japan without a passport?

Comment by Mike's Mom (S-PACT/Yokosuka,JP) on September 9, 2012 at 11:41pm

He said he already sent for a welcome package. I have the main command site bookmarked and they have a link to request a sponser, in case he hasn't had a chance to do that already. He doesn't have a passport, but I filled out the paperwork, when we see him at PIR I will find out exactly when he will be here and we can set up an appointment to go for the interview. We'll have to figure a secure way of sending it to him after it gets back, but I'm sure that won't be impossible. Now that I think about it, I may just take the paperwork with us and see if there is some way for him to get it done while he is still in GL. Anyone know? Yes, we are going to PIR. My mom lives in Ohio and she is going to meet us at OHare and go too. I'm so excited I can barely stand it!

Mikey's Mom - as soon as he's able encourage him to get in contact with his sponsor from the ship.  That person will be able to help him with all kinds of stuff.
