Are you going to PIR?  I've seen it twice.  It's something I will NEVER forget.  First time was while touring Great Lakes the summer before he left.  That was crazy!  It was like a college tour for him.  We stayed on the A side and got to tour the entire boot camp side (except battlestaions of course)    But being there for his PIR was Amazing.  The pride!  A friend of mine was just there Friday for her nephews.  She was impressed.

One question - does he have a passport already?  Did they talk to him about that?  No one discussed it with my son, but thankfully he already had one.  He was not well prepared when he went.  Things were much better when he got there.  Everyone was very helpful.  Much better than when he was in Virginia.

PIR is next Fri., 9/14. He went in unrated (called PACT seaman). They go on for 3 weeks of basic seamanship and then get shipped to their first command. So he had orders nearly 2 weeks ago. He will get leave before he goes and will report mid-October in Yoko.

Thank you so much for all the information. My SR called today. They passed battle stations so now he is a real sailor! He was so excited to get info on his soon to be new home. He gets to come home for a couple of weeks before he leaves for Japan.

I've never gotten a call from him when they were underway.  He calls or Skypes when they stop somewhere, but I've never gotten a call from the ship.

But yeah - Thanksgiving.  I'm just hoping they aren't delayed because of another breakdown.  Thankfully we got travel insurance ;)

One of the biggest things with rooms on base is space.  He had all the right stuff for a couple months, but there was no space available.

I am so disappointed that not all ships do Tiger Cruises.  I'm anxious to see the base though.  When he was at Great Lakes we were there all the time.  It was definitely a unique experience.

Mikey's Mom - when is he scheduled to report to the ship?  Is he still in boot camp?  They are underway until Thanksgiving.  When Adam got to Japan he was flown out to them. It was quite the experience.

Thank you both for the great information. Jenismer-what does it take to get a room on base? Do you know if they ever have Tiger cruises?

I will ask him what text app he uses.  It doesn't cost anything.

I'm one of the lucky ones.  My sailor is in contact all the time.  We Skype, e-mail, text, Voxer and sometimes he calls regular.  He did get a phone over there. He can only use it in Japan, but it's an Iphone so he can use it with wifi in other countries.

He took very little with him to Japan.  His sponsor told him no more than what could fit in his sea bag and backpack.  They really don't have much room on the ship.  He said when their unit isn't being inspected they have stuff stashed all over the place.  I'm always careful what I send to him too.  He was on the ship for 9 months before he got a room on base.  I made sure that the only things I sent to him were disposable or very small.  Or food. ;)

My sailor brought tons of stuff home when he left Great Lakes after A school.  We live 4 1/2 hours away so he was home quite a bit while he was there.  I had him home for Thanksgiving AND Christmas.

New almost sailor mom. My SR is wodering about how people communicate with home - special cell plan, Skype, international phone cards?? We would like to be prepared before he leaves next month.

Also curious how much, if any, personal lockable space they might get on their ship ( he is going to USS Cowpens).

I am also wodering about bedding - what can they bring from home?

Donna2d - I'm making the trip to Japan this year.  I posted the question on Japan Moms but didn't get much response.  If you get some good info - please let me know.  My mom and I are making the trip.

Sounds like there was a lot of talk about the hull swap for awhile, but nothing since.  My sailor knows one of the guys from the other ship from boot camp.  Sounds like that group knows more than ours.
