Well he was only in Japan for a couple of days and poof.. they are underway.. Does anyone have he address for the ship? Will they get letter/packages? Yes, this is our first time at this, he is pretty fresh from PIR.

Robin - now that he's on his way keep us in the keep posting to keep us in the loop. Just remember to share. Questions & concerns are why we're here. Also if this is his first deployment - Navy is not the only resource available. I have gotten great advise from these ladies....Take care

Thank you Elane and Cheryl!!! Good info. He comes home for a couple of weeks before heading over to the Antietam. I hope he will get out and explore the country when he has time!! We are looking forward to visiting him at some point. He thinks he will be there 3 years.

my son spent 26 months on the Antietam.  when he went over I put his Verizon phone on military hold.   no charge for unlimited time...  He got a japanese phone there, they have different type of sim card so the US ones don't work without expensive Int'l national plans on them .. They can get phones with plans for reduced rates for stateside calls or get the wi-fi on them.  If they have a computer the option of skype, facetime, etc does exist.   Although mine IS NOT a communicator...so I am glad he is back stateside.  be sure to look up the facebook page for the ship, also get connected with the ship's Ombudsman fb page and there are a couple of others pages that post pix.   If your's is a socializer ..it will be easier for him to make friends and explore the country.  I did get to go visit mine there, it was a fantastic experience.

Robin - my sailor "suspended" his Verizon cellphone acct. when he left the States. That means when anytime he comes back they can simply re-active that line/number. He bought a new one when he got to Yokosuka - though he says service is not the best. The Live Stream notice and link was posted on the Antietam's FB account, but I have not receive a Viper Friday for over a month. I think they lost a PR crewmember so it may no longer be available. There are some really interesting pictures on their FB for a "Tiger" cruise they just completed.

Great! Thank you for the Response. We are very excited for him to have the opportunity to experience Japan. His grandparents were stationed at a nearby Air Base and his uncle was born there. Do they take their phones there and just get a new plan there and cancel the one here? So many questions.... where is the Live Sream?

Robin my son has been assigned to the Antietam since Sept. They just got back to their home base in Yokosuka Japan. It's 60 KM south east of Tokyo. He loves it over there and has embraced the culture. The Antietam has a Facebook Page and that can give you an idea of what activities our sailors participate in on and off duty. This winter my sailor participated in a volleyball tournament, they also post pictures of their parties, charitable events, ship activities and sailor accomplishments. In the past they have live streamed their weekly crew meetings - Viper Fridays (11 PM on Thursday for us) Welcome on board.

Anyone out there? My son just got orders for Japan and the Antietam.

sorry Cheryl-TedsMom, don't have experience with any of the Airline credit cards.   I did get to go to Japan to visit my son in March on the Antietam.  before they went out to sea.  flew Delta...they treated us very well.  fed us several times, video screen on the back of every seat for entertainment for the lengthy flight.   but the plane was full, not a lot of leg room. Glad I went,  tickets were booked several weeks in advance but had to be changed due to ships schedule.  cost about 1300$ each round trip (Omaha to Narita airport in Japan).
