Robin - I'm glad you posted what you did. Only knowing my sailor - it's hard to know how the others on the ship feel. Those are my sailors feelings exactly. I have to remind him that this is only temporary.
And I'm so happy for you!!!!!! Having him back in the US ..... I can't wait for that day. But my sailor has indicated that he won't mind being overseas again. He's young and single..... and I have a valid passport. I guess I could handle Italy or Spain ;)
Haup9 - more than likely he will be on a military flight over there. When my sailor went his plan was just to find the USO at the airport for help, but since it was a military flight, they organized everyone as they were getting off the plane. They all took a shuttle bus to the base and there was someone to guide him the entire way. I remember him being relieved that it was easier than he thought it would be. My sailors sponsor wasn't much help - or any at all. That's unfortunate. When it's their first duty station and they have no one to help them it's so overwhelming. But he didn't have any trouble once he got there. It was much much better than when he went to Virginia for C school. No one would help him, half the people didn't even know they were coming, he didn't have a room, and on and on. But Yokosuka had it all going in the right direction. There's a bus going between base and the airport every day.
My son leaves on Saturday to fly to Japan. He has tried to get ahold of his LPO to find out how to get to base from the airport and the LPO hasn't responded yet. Does anyone know how much a taxi is from the airport to the base? I would rather he have some Yen on him and more than he might need just in case. Thanks for any info you can provide.
Curfew and other things.
yes - and unfortunately it can be worse when they are deployed. The extra rules that have been imposed have been difficult. My sailor will be there 2 years in June and can't wait to get out of there. It's sad because he loves Japan. But the other parts are lacking.
Mike's Mom, Same story here. Mine is VERY unhappy. I think he feels like he's in prison., feels like there's not much opportunity to get a rate after going in undesignated, etc. etc. He's very displeased with things. Beaks my heart. :-(
