Hi ladies. Tell me how you managed... I just put Matt on a plane to San Diego to tie up loose ends there. He flies to Japan early Sunday. How did you make the day knowing you wouldn't see them for so long. We set up skype but that's not helping me right now.

I usually send my son magazines, gum/life savers, nuts, and things to share with everyone. I think he likes the iTunes cards the best though. Sometimes I'll tuck in postcards from our area for fun. We live in SO CAL so there are lots of different post cards to send.

I always send my son Fairytale Brownies because they ship free to the military. My son loves the brownies and since they support the military I support them. I use the USPS priority boxes they ship at a flat rate for up to 70 lbs.

I'm new to this group, and am relieved to see that other sons don't communicate about their everyday life!

I am seeking suggestions for care packages as well as birthday/holiday presents for what they might need? i have seen that some packages get delivered to the ship, but not always. Is there any rule of thumb?

Thanks.

Thanks for the info. My M is undesignated right now. And I am trying to understand what that means too.

I think it depends on what a sailor does as to what his day is like. If he or she is working with ammo/guns then they might have to clean guns one day, prepare for/do an onload the next. If they are in engineering then whatever goes wrong on the ship they need to fix it, etc. They all have watch in addition to their regular jobs. Add bad weather to that and sometimes it can be really exciting or everyone can get seasick. I'm just piecing together some of the things my son has told me as he, too, has never said what life is like on a ship.

What is it like? A day in the life for our sailors at sea?

I think they can have their phone but not sure. When my son is on the ship he usually emails or skypes. Friend me and I'll let you know snail mail address. Welcome to the site and if you have other questions hopefully we can help.

Pray for the 7th fleet who are doing anti-sub exercises with S. Korea this week (including the Fitz). No loose lips read it on Google Alert. High tension in the area with N. Korea and China.
