Yes the nex-Norfolk.... You would think by it being a naval base people wouldn't do that especially other sailors but that's not the case... When the bush was in the shipyard they went out for a couple days and came back and there were a lot of cars on blocks and ours would have been too because they broke the center cap on one rim but our lug locks saved us.... And also the shipyard is in a bad area and they don't have gated or secured areas to park for e5 and below.

Janae'-ok so you mean storage at the NEX-Norfolk....that sounds like a great idea!! and he told me that leaving it on base just parked wasn't an option...he had heard too of the car break-ins. i still can not wrap my brain around all the theft.......

My husband said that some people leave their cars in storage at the nex and it's like 20 or 30 dollars a month and they start your car, check your oil, make sure everything is working, etc... Please let him know that it is not a good idea to leave his car just parked on base, especially if it is a nice one because he may come back to a car with no wheels or no car at all.... When I dropped my husband off last week we saw a car sitting on cinder blocks.... It was someone who had been gone out to sea for about 3 weeks and the car had already been on blocks for about 2 weeks and the parking lot was covered in glass... I think that it's awful that some people can just steal what others have worked hard to get...

thanks CeeCee-i just got off the phone telling him that he does have to do his own laundry but will send him a note that he has "options"....not very good one i see.

i also talked to him about the theft issues onboard and he said it is a BIG problem at Oceana too.

his car was loaded to the hilt with "stuff" to go to Oceana.  he wants to store his car and his belongings while he is on the Bush in a Storage Unit near the Norfolk base.  he asked me to see if any of you have any recommendations.  since he won't be finished with school until 9-14 we have plenty of time but want to be well prepared.

Connie....they don't HAVE to do their own laundry but my son says it is best to do your own, if you don't want to have to buy new clothes....LOL and Annette, thanks for the name of the detergent/fab soft in one.....I remembered this morning that I thought it was Purex...but now know for sure!

oh nooooo i still have so much to learn!! i had no idea that they still do their own laundry aboard the ship.....what in the heck was i thinking????? my list...where did i put my list!!!!!
Comment by Annette on May 14, 2011 at 11:06pm
Peggy, you should be able to purchase a ship to shore card @ at&t, I think he can also purchase on from the store on the ship. I think that is what my son told me.
Comment by Annette on May 14, 2011 at 11:01pm

It makes me sad (but not surprised) to hear about the sticky fingers on the ship. My son has had lots of things come up missing until he finally got wise and locked everything up. It took him awhile, but I think he learned his lesson.

Name of the laundry detergent with fab soft. is Purex 3-in-1. Some of the things I put in my son's care packages: Smores frosting & graham crackers. (the frost does not need to be refrigerated). That way he can have his smores. I Also put in the little Betty Crocker single cake or brownie mix, he just adds a little water and zaps it in microwave for a couple of minutes. Not as good as mom makes but it works. :)
