Katie/I bought a car here in MI. We drove it out to her this past summer.  She will drive it back to MI b4 deployment so her brothers can use it while she is gone.

Anita, you are soooo right!  i remember you telling us about that!  he knew she didn't have a driver's license!

Comment by LTs Mom on January 8, 2013 at 11:38am

Oh no!  What a jerk!  I'm so sorry your daughter got burned.

My son wants to buy a truck when he returns from deployment.  He will probably need to do that at home when he's on leave and drive it back to Norfolk.

Buying a car in Norfolk - BUYER BEWARE!   My daughter got strong-armed into buying a car (oh, did I mention she does NOT have a driver's license) and now this vehicle sits in what I loosely call an impound lot and is going into dry-rott.  By the time she gets her license, every rubber part on this car will need to be replaced.  Do not let your loved one get caught in this trap!  Those greasy used car dealers see fresh sailors coming from a mile away!

Hi Colleen, do you know about "uncompensated TAD"?  i think that is what it is called. Sailor is leaving the ship for a 92 day school and no arrangements for barracks?  he is very happy to be chosen for the school and thinks it will help in his re-enlistment. thanks for any help in understanding this.

Thanks everybody I am starting to understand what it takes to get setup properly while stationed in and about Norfolk while serving on the G.H.W.B . We think the first thing to do is get him his Car there within the next month or two and then hopefully some kind / any kind of off ship housing can come next. He gets that the big picture is getting ready to deploy but is wise enough to know he needs a place to escape to while in port. Thanks again for your help and insight it's hard as a parent to try and let em go yet still run a little interference now and then....lol

Slobaby, My Sailor got approved for PPV (housing for junior sailors) and although she claims it is not worth her BAH, she is happy with it because she ended up with a unit on the base and do not have to worry about the traffic...she can only live there up to the paygrade of E5 but it is a nice option for when the ship is home.  Your Sailor will have to run a request chit through his chain of command to request it but it is a nice option..she can cook and get away from the ship when they are inport.

LTs Mom, thanks for the vote of confidence and the support....

Well getting ready to spend my last couple of hours with my Sailor before drop off at the airport in the morning...thank God for the time!

Yes Graceism, it's so nice to have the support of the group.  I'm not a big poster, but I do follow everything on this board.

Slobaby, I agree with JackieD's comments, I too would recommend your son sit tight.  My son hates living on the ship as well and he doesn't have a vehicle to get around in - yet -  he's planning on changing all that when he returns from deployment.  He's soooo ready to get his cranking done and see some flight deck action.

Hello Group.  I have not been writing too much lately but now it is hitting me that my Sailor is getting ready to start her Navy career for real.  She is assigned to the USS Bush as an IT3 and currently cranking....on her New Years' message to the family she told us that she realizes the Navy is her life now...she is not the same person we sent to bootcamp over a year ago...she is home for the second holiday leave period and she flys out on Saturday back to the ship .... We have survived bootcamp, a year long A & C School assignment and now it all comes together for what she has been training for...she is very positive about her experience so far but so much of it does not make sense to her and I tell you ... it is a new Navy since I was in ... so some of it does not make sense to me either and my famous words to her continue to be "God did not bring you this far to leave you now.." I am already missing her and she is not gone yet.  So thank you to the more experienced moms for sharing your knowledge!  Namaste'
