Hello everyone,

Hope you all had a great Christmas and New Years.

Sorry I have not been around much, work has me swamped and very little time for the internet.

My son has had a great year on the Bush since returning from deployment. He made E-5, got his Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist, accomplished some impressive things in his shop, etc. He's now deciding whether to stay in the Navy and go to shore duty or to get out of the Navy and go to college.

Either way, he will be departing the Bush in about six months and I'd like to get another admin for the group lined up. If you're interested in being an admin of this group please shoot me a message. It would be best if we had an admin that was around here a lot and could assist those with questions and keep the group active.

I'll try and find my way in more often as I miss all the great support from the ladies in this group.

I hope you and your Sailors are doing well and have a great 2016.

Our son has been on the Bush since Jan, and have been a member of NFM's since 2012. Look forward to sharing info with other moms.

Looking for Christmas gift suggestions, keeping in mind the limited space while living on a carrier. Any things that your LOs are glad to have?

Comment by Laura on November 22, 2015 at 11:10pm

Tracy - Not all of the sailors take leave at the same time.  It is up to your sailor's individual command as to who goes when.

Tracy,  I would love to help you, but my daughter's last day on the Bush was the 6th of November.

Anita in Ohio- I'll try to be brief, this time. We'll see....

But my daughter's topsy turvy life lead her from not being able to remain in college, then begrudgingly joining the Navy, loving it, progressing, sustaining 3 injuries, then returning to civilian life. Recently, she blew the engine in the SUV her Dad gave her, to finish college in-- the only thing he had to offer her, as assistance. Oh, well! We're presently working through some sticky and complicated "rearranging of family vehicles "-- long story.

My hell-raising wildcat, in her first year of college, seems to have focused on going in so many directions, she seemed to have focused on everything but adding oil to her vehicle with 200,000 miles on it... an accident wai ting to happen, that vehicle.

I know they warn of A.R.I.'s (alcohol related incidences ), after deployments. I kind of think adjusting to so very many changes in such a young person's life... We'll, it could throw anyone off kilter, trying to get back into a rhythm, once becoming a civilian, OR after a deployment. I think my daughter was spinning her wheels so fast, maybe, trying to catch up on lost time, after 5 whole years. Even with multiple reminders to check her oil, still, she forgot to do this simple, regular task. So, for what it's worth, I think, as they say, "Have someone else do the driving, when first back from deployment"-- maybe our kids need to be reminded to really focus on handling alm kinds of things in a well-rounded manner, when readjusting to civilian life.

Lots of ups, and certainly some downs, here, with MY sailor. I wish you and your daughter some lovely fair winds and following seas, Anita, in your futures. She's lucky she's got a great Mom by her side! AND she's a more disciplined, motivated and more mature women, after her years of serving. I'm sure things will turn out okay. Still, watch her back, I'd like to say. ;)

Good luck to her, with all the time-consuming logistics, paperwork, etc. If she attends college, I hope the scheduling, the start date, with her housing income, any job stuff all runs copascetically for her.

I, myself, keep checking Navy Mom email post notifications, on and off, regarding comments, here.

Maybe we'll stay in touch. I would like to catch an update, now and again, by staying "nosey" on this site.

All the best... to all the Mom's and their kids. ♡ It's been a pleasure to be able to engage with others in the same boat. :))

Anita- As for how life goes, I'm sorry your daughter's present dreams are dashed, and her present status sucks.

However, my own daughter HAD to join the Navy, as a resort due to losing her scholarship for college, because of her D+ average. She cried, when her Dad suggested the Navy, as a "safer" way to earn a college education (than other branches), yet she knew he was right, so join she did, AND re-up, as well.

She earned numerous medals, had some "Wow"(!) moments, soared in her classes, was promoted and loved it, had her arm twisted, to re-up, again... but her destiny, she decided, was to get back to civilian life and finish getting her degree.

This flip-flop has turned out very well. She's on her way t owards bringing her GPA up high enough to get into her desired U. of Miami, to finish her degree, or degrees... maybe even a PhD., she says, this week.

So you never know what doors may be opened for YOUR daughter, as mine might never have gotten straight A's, without the discipline of having served in the Navy.

Some family members encouraged her to stay in. I wanted her to enjoy a more "normal" life, for instance, falling in love, getting married, without the separations that deployments bring (therefore, having a better chance of STAYING married, I felt). Also, I've been a disabled Mom, in need of my kids, yet the Navy, 5 years, and earning a master's, for 3 years, has separated my 2 kids from me. Honestly, it was so hard, always staying strong, while missing my sailor daughter-- being unable to vacation when they want, while serving, and their base being SO far from home (I feel for all the Mom's on this page).

So, as crazy as change can be, sometimes, it can open NEW and EXCITING doors, tell your daughter.

Now you and your daughter can talk about whatever you want, without the constraints as those during deployments.

(Cont.-- as there has been another "hiccup" in my daughter's life, that STILL needs "massaging"-- cuz life always has it's ups and downs. There is always a need for us to help our kids with navigating... we can help them to keep "steady as she goes", or at least alsays be by their sides, through their trials and tribulations). Keep the faith....
