Redsmom, here is the link to the Navy Lodge on Hampton Blvd, just down the street from the base. Navy Lodge. It's a nice place to stay.

John and Yvonne, since you live in the area, can you recommend a couple of hotels?  I plan to come and pick up sailor's car and would like a reasonably close (to the base) place to stay.  Thanks!

Welcome to the Truman family, Joannie!  Mine uses his if not "on" the ship, then near-by as he is living on the ship, so having it there with him makes it useful.  When they are not in port, they have to buy a phone card and call from whatever phones they are told that they may use. Hope this helps.

Joannie Crocker,

Most of the time they can't use their cell phone on the ship. But they can use the computers. When they are in port.

Just to let you know, my husband and I open our home and invite sailors to comed over on the weekends. If you go to our page on this site, you can see what we do. We feed them and play board games, watch movies, etc . We would like to invite your son over while he is still here. We can pm you our cell # if he is interested. :) And we would like to invite him over for Easter dinner too. There is another sailor from the Truman who comes over too.

My son is being transferredFriday. to Norfolk and will be on USS Harry Truman. I have tons of questions. Can he use his cell phone on the ship? Can he call home if he can’t?

We shouldn't put sensitive/specific information like that out on these type of platforms.
