Grace-I think most of the time they stay on that particular ship until re-enlistment, their PRD(transfer date), or the type of job.My husband signed for 5 years and his contract has him serving all 5 on the Truman. I guess it just depends. I will say that when on deployment and when he gets free time they usually try to provide some time of recreation for them to keep them occupied. I know on last cruise they played basketball in the hanger bay and had a Truman Idol competition, like American Idol, and many other things. And yes, they can bring their laptops. My husband is!

I really don't think it has anything to do with the post office on the ship. I personally think its the post offices here in the Norfolk area. I have lived here for going on 2 years and there have been quite a few times that I would be expecting something in the mail and it NEVER got to me. My parents back home in SC sent a birthday card to my husband which had a gift card in it and he never got it. I also know from experience by living in an apartment that some of the mailmen don't even take the time to seperate the mail into the appropriate boxes for each apartment. They will just put a majority of it in the front pocket which is pretty much a free for all type thing. An example, I get Woman's Day magazine every month and I can tell when we have a different mailman than our normal guy because or normal guy will put the magazine in my box. Anybody else and they will just put it in the front pocket. This is just my experience.

My husband said that the Marines are part of a squadron so if you know the squadron ust put that in the address and your loved one should get it.

Pat L D-Do you know what division your son works in? My husband is an LS and works in the post office on the ship and he knows the box numbers by heart so if he knows the division he can give you the box number.

There is a website where you can buy cards and have them sent to your loved one on the ship. https://shop.aafes.com/scs/default.aspx. You may have to copy and paste this to the web browser. Once you get that page up, click where it says "Purchase a prepaid card." Look for the cards that says "AT&T Ship-to-Shore Prepaid Phone Cards" ONLY. This is real important. You can order 1 card or sets of 10,25,50,100 or 250 cards. The price of each set gets pricey as you go up. Once you know which one you want, click on the "Purchase now" underneath the card(its in blue). This should bring up a page where you can enter your Sailor's mailing address on the ship. It HAS to be the address on the ship so make sure you and your Sailor verify their address. Once you do that then click "Continue" and I'm sure from there it will ask for your payment option. Hope this helps and if you have any more questions please feel free to ask!

Ladies, my husband is on the ship and we have already been through 1 deployment. From experience I know that there will be times when your loved ones will be able to use the payphones on the ship whether in port or not. My husband got to call numerous times, sometimes 3-4 times a week, even when they weren't in port. Don' t think that the only time you will hear from them is when they are in port. Same with the email as well. HOWEVER, there will be times when you may not even hear from them at all for 1-2 weeks at a time but this doesn't happen too often. Phone cards go fast on the ship so make sure to let your sailors know to get them when they can. If not, they will have to wait on the next shipment of mail which can take days to get to them. Hope this helps everyone!
