Sorry, MissMySailor!  I just mentioned that information about cakes in a jar because I had thought about doing it myself but after researching it decided it wasn't the best thing to send to ships.  From what I've gathered it's fine if you know that the package will arrive within 2 weeks or less.  Since our guys went 4 weeks without mail it would worry me to send something like that.  Hopefully they'll be getting their mail more regularly now.

Navymom9875 now you have me nervous, I was told you have to use a cake mix and not make it by scratch and that it lasts up to 6 months and I know so many MOMs that have send this when their kids were on deployment but now I don't know maybe I will send it when he is on base darn

Has anyone else here sent the cake in a jar???

From what I have read about "cake in a jar"  they can be source of food-borne illness.  Just because they seem to "seal" when taken out of the oven they really aren't sealed in the same way that jars processed in water for canning seal.  While they may stay fresh for a week or two, after that they are subject to spoilage.  With mail to ships so sporadic it would seem to me that it is a risky thing to send.  At least I would recommend that you emphasize to your LO that they shouldn't be eaten if they show any sign of contamination or spoilage.

Here is a link to one source on this topic, if you google it you can find many more:

This page also has some good suggestions for items that are safe to mail.

Paula, I didn't think we could send perisable items. Plus can they get into the kitchen? 'Cuz I could vacuum pack some fresh green chilies to send.??? In our box, we put in beef jerky, trail mix, magazine, small book, and silly straw. Gotta have something to laugh about (though he probably just thought "Mom"). The next one will have sheet music since he bought one before he left - smaller than guitar, he said. Pictures of family/friends/pets always good. Louise, welcome! As far as this being a first, I must admit I feel the anxiety too.  Jane

Hi Louise nice to meet you! Can you email your son and ask him what he needs? What is a spook??? I sent some care boxes but I kind of knew a little of what he needed because I had him make me a list of what he would want. This is his first deployment as well but the month long underways I think gave him an idea. Them two weeks ago he emailed me and asked for lots of black athletic socks. Even when I send packages for Adopt A Sailor they always asked for socks. I sent my son a 10" travel DVD player and a bunch of movies in case he get enough time to relax. He likes cake so I got some wide mouth mason jars and a cook book for deserts you make in the jars. You screw the caps on the jars right out of the oven and it makes a seal and the insides are suppose to be good for 6 months. 1 cake mix makes allot of jars so I was going to send some to others too
Hope this gives you some ideas. Paula
