I guess all of us are in need of this page again, it got me through boot camp also. I was in Norfolk for the weekend and got home this morning at 2:15 a.m. I really enjoyed my time with my sailor but it was the hardest thing to say goodbye. I didn't get to go to the ship because he had to be on it by 4:30 a.m. so had to say goodbye from the Navy lodge. So glad I looked on my sons facebook page, Thanks Paula for putting this group on his page for me. Navy Hugs to you all.
I am so glad you got to go see your son and meet so many people. I have my Navy flag waving outside the front porch and have been thinking of the ship often. It is so nice that they have each others back good friends make a difference.
I am going to start working on a box for my son since I know it will take a long time for him to get it.
HUgs to all, Paula
Ah, what a day!! I am so thankful for each of you and excited to do this deployment together!! For anyone that is local please plan to meet us tomorrow morning for breakfast. :) I can't wait to meet you all.
I don't know much about phone cards but I do recommend what has been said. Have your sailors put their cell phones on hold for deployment. If they find a port where they will have time to use it they can reactivate it. The ship does have phones but access to them depends on a lot of things including where the sailor works. I would not plan to hear from them by phone. A great tip for communication is to number your emails. If not your sailor may get email 3 with some concerning family info that you previously addressed in emails 1 and 2. If you number your messages your sailor will know if they have missed a few, this will help lessen frustration on their end. :)
I am here for you all if there is anything I can do to help you EVER please don't hesitate to call! Thank you for your faithful love to your sailors!!!
Marshall'smom: I bought my LO International calling cards at a CVS drug store. The per minute price varies depending on what country they are calling from
MissMySailor - I'm pretty sure their ship doesn't have phones. I think they only can make calls when they are in port.
I got this from a Chicago mom who's son just got back from the gulf he is Navy as well:
He can call from the ship phones but connection is not always good. I did buy him several ship to shore calling cards. I think they are AT&T. If you google ship to shore cards is how I found them. Zome kids put their cells on a special hold and use rhem in port. Dont know about that.dan bought a disposable cell which has worked so far.they have port calls about once a month. . Not much to do and cant venture too far off the base. Havent heard of any other places yet. I mail packages about once every 4-6 weeks. Things take about 4 weeks to vet there. They dont have much storage so snacks and magazines are what I mostly send him. Not sure what I MIssed! Let me know! I have had my moments, but overall just so proud of him and the time does go by more quickly than I would have thought! Oh email. Yes they can email whenever. There are a few blackout times like when they went throigh the XYZ .but most of the time it is available 24/7.
I got the e-mail about the changes and I know this is a hard thing for us all but I worry now why they have to go early... Everyone will be in my prayers I hope you all have quality time with your loved ones.

Hi! I just found this group yesterday. My son is on the Dunham. Anyone know if there's anything going on (for families) the day they deploy? We were planning on being there but have heard there's been a change of plans. If true, I'm really disappointed. Anyone else know what's happening? Thanks!
Thank you for sharing. It does offer something to us other moms that are sharing your feelings. My son is also excited about going abroad. It's important to know they have faith.....it helps to support our faith.
