Redhead you CAN use a flash drive just like an sd card! And some of them drives hold a lot of gigs!

Thanks for the info, Largefilipino. I think since my son just got his, he maybe doesnt have the version with the SD slot. I think that Kindle has to become competitive though. just because they have a kind of monopoly on it right now, and not everyone wants to be able to get their books one way. My son doesn't have a net book, just his Ipod. I could send him the netbook and just insure it so if it gets crushed, I can send him another one. I don't know if you can use a USB flash drive for converted movies to play on the IPOD? Sounds like it might be worth looking into. I don't remember his Ipod with a USB port, but maybe thats where the charge goes, too.

I can't wait to hear from him... he's a guy of few words on paper, but on the phone you just can't get to him to be quiet once he starts talking!

Alright Redhead. This is gonna get technical but if you have a PDF file for your E reader you have to convert it to a epub format.
http://vidds.net/v/en/how-to-download-ebooks-and-convert-pdf-into-e...

The kindle first generation has a sd slot but not the newer one. If you have the first gen then just load the epub files into your sd card and send it. Then it will pop up when your loved one loads the card in his Kindle.

My daughter has a netbook on board. She does not have a cd drive. That's why I send her an sd card with movies converted from DVD to AVI. It also makes the file small enough but still playable thru Quicktime or VLC
Here's one way to convert a DVD movie to AVI:

That's just one of many ways. Lots of converters out there. This is cool because our loved ones don't have much room and an sd card you can send with a card or letter! a 4 GB card can hold 4 full 2 hour movies converted to AVI.

Thanks everyone for the wam welcome! My daughter was able to get the ships address from the ombudsman and is sending off a package. What kinds of things do you send? We were thinking maybe personal care items, but I don't know whats available to them. I'd like to send him an SD card or memory stick for his IPOD maybe with movies or TV shows he likes. He brought a Kindle on board but we don;t know how to get him more books to load on. Anyone tech savvy who has any ideas about this? Priscilla, its good to know that there is someone close by who has a child on board. I know their grownups but they'll always be our kids. Thanks again and welcome Kim! My son really wanted to go to Japan. Maybe he will at some point, but obviously not now. Will your son be joining up with them as they are about to come home?
