Thank you Katie and mikes mom, I am feeling better already! What a great group to start a discussion and learn how everyone else is doing and feeling.  :)

Sailormomterry - Hes going to be fine.. Our sons/husbands/daughters have all been on the Mesa Verde for so long and they are all missing their families... Just send him lots of packages and he will be fine..

What a good attitude your boyfriend has, Katie.  He sounds like a keeper! And you are right - deployments don't last forever!

I am writing because my son was just delivered to the Mesa Verde.  He has only been in boot camp and school and he is now on the Mesa Verde which he was very excited about, because he said he will now finally feel like a Sailor.  However, I am very sad to hear that the morale is that low.  I realize they have been gone for a while and will be for a while, but now since I have not heard from my son, I am not sure what he thinks.??? Now I am worried about his expectations, and what other Sailors will say about the whole experience. I hope to hear from him soon.

The way I see it is that I would rather have my son Board then where he was his last deployment ... So I put a smile on my face ... This is a very long deployment and there isn't much to do ...

I'll bet most of us have gotten at least one very depressed sounding email or call from our loved one on the Mesa Verde. This really long deployment is hard on them, especially with so few port calls. My husband, who was a Marine deployed in Vietnam long ago, said he would worry if our son DIDN'T sound down at least some of the time. It's only normal. We may hear the worst of it because they feel that they can vent safely to their moms/sweethearts/spouses. All we can do is let them vent, then try to shore them up.  Send packages, remind them how proud we are of them. I think a lot of them may feel unappreciated or that they aren't really doing anything important, because they keep doing the same things over and over. Soxfanmarinemom, be glad your son will open up to you when he's feeling down. He knows you are there for him, and that's important.

Sweetie all of our children I am sure are feeling the same way and yes nobody ever likes the cook... Your son has to cook for how many people ??? Seeeeee The TV chefs couldn't even cook for 2500 people.. Please let him know that I am sure people are eating his food cuz I haven't heard of anyone starving.. LOL He is not alone with his feeling it is such a long deployment... Give him a virtual hug and kiss and say well look at how BIG everyone is getting and if they don't like his cooking then have them try ... Bless his heart..

hello ladies, i am not much of a poster but... i got an email from my son, he sounds so down. he is a cook, says no one appreciates him there. i wrote words of encouragement but that brought a reply of 'what do i have after this, i have nothing'. i am at a loss as to what to do, he is usually so upbeat about everything. any suggestions?

I sent my husband Halloween decorations and candy. I made up little treat bags for all the guys that work for him. I also made homemade cookies. Hopefully the cookies will still be good by the time they get there!
