it would take more than mojitos or sangria to wash haggis down me!

No love for the Haggis?? LOL! I love the show Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmern, and if it's taught me anything, it's be brave and try the local food! Still have that Haggis for when you come up, Deanne! LOL! And if you want excellent mojitos or Sangria, then a trip to NYC should happen! :)

cool, baskin robbins!  did he eat the reindeer? JD said it was good, but the color of the meat is red so it didn't look cooked.  in scotland he wouldn't try the Haggis - the national dish of sheep livers and hearts stuffed into the sheep stomach and boiled in a pot with oatmeal.  uggghh  i asked JD if they ever got that kind of local food on the boat - he said no, they bring it with them or restock with Navy food.

i've seen the duty be 3 days or 4 days.  it can be different for each job description depending on how many guys are qualified for the type of duty.

JD has talked about steak and shrimp.  not all the time.  but they do get good food.

yes, they all tease unmercifully!!

yes

there are two cycles of leave like catie said.  he should already know when his will be.  they put in their preference ahead, then find out which cycle they get. even when he goes to shore duty, there will be a cycle of the week before christmas, or the week after.

if the boat is in it's homeport, they stay in the dorm or wherever they live and report to the boat each day to work.

thanksgiving should be a good meal - all the sub meals are designed to be the best in the military. the food is considered to be compensation for the underwater duty.

Ish-mom, probably a lot of your questions cannot be answered publicly here, but perhaps someone in the know will private mail you with some details. It's all new to me also. I do know they can't all be away at once. And I do hope they get a nice Thanksgiving meal even if at sea. Are you on Facebook? There are a couple private groups for Navy moms. Let me know and we can discuss privately how to find one another so I can get you invited.

do they go back onto the boat or base after leave? trying to figure what to get him for Christmas,,,
Comment by ISH-MOM on November 8, 2011 at 2:24pm
This it the first time that Scott will not be home for Christmas,  I am already dreading it!  He was at bootcamp for Thanksgiving last year..That was hard enough!   I am still hoping for him to be home for Christmas though.  Not holding my breath though,  Do they all get leave from the Miami at the same time?
Comment by LLovesmysailor on November 8, 2011 at 2:12pm
I'm not sure how to answer that question. Since Alex has been on Miami, they have been home for the holidays. If he couldn't get home, he spent the day with friends. But he always had some kind of leave during the holidays. This year he's hoping to get leave in Jan, so he won't be home for Christmas.

With the holidays coming up, my question is how do the celebrate them?  Do they have services for the people that practice religions?  And do they get a regular Holiday Dinner?
