Well I'm not sure they are supposed to have anything that can store memory, like the chip that goes in it, but I'm not sure.. now the digital picture key chain wouldn't have an extra memory chip.  I like the pillow case thing - maybe some small consumable things? We'll keep thinking.

Susan  - I haven't heard a thing about  a motorcycle.  I'm kind of bummed out about that longer deployment. Having them gone for the holidays is so hard. I haven't decided what to do about this Christmas yet. Last year we sent along a digital picture frame with pictures of the family etc..In hindsight we're not sure that was really legal to do!  Anyway it's hard to think what to do.  I hope you share any good ideas you come up with and I will too.

Yes this deployment is a little longer because they are taking the sub all the way from Bangor to the western pacific. It is coming out of maintenance. At least that saves one flight to Guam. Renee you can always correct me if I am wrong. They will be gone for Thanksgiving and Christmas :( I still don't know what to send with him. My son drives a Subaru- boys and their toys. I also heard a little about a motorcycle and I freaked out. Don't tell me Renee if you heard he did get one :(

Susan, yes I heard that E helped him. I think that's awesome that they're friends
Yes it was a mustang!

Kendrasue - hugs to you :)

I think these boys (our boys that are men) have to protect their hearts in the navy- I think it can be cruel --though he's never really come out and said it. He would never admit to anything like "protecting his heart"!!  It's just the feeling I get.

My son is also living in an off base apartment.  Susan, he thinks he's met your son before he went underway and then again when he came back I think..his comment was "He's a nice guy".    Mine-- is really hard to get to know, very quiet until you know him quite well, so I'm not sure how that is all going down in the Navy

I asked my son when he was home, (he left just today)  about a midway box or halfway box or something, and he was like I don't know what you're talking about. I do know that the Michigan has a halfway party that they auction off things.  One time he had us get tickets to a sporting event (in Seattle that he put in the auction) and one time he won golf clubs at the auction which he really loved.  So maybe the bags/boxes are part of that party.  I don't know why he doesn't know a thing about it. Sometimes he's not to forthcoming with information. I did send a long something for him for Christmas during the last deployment.. I didn't ask if I was supposed too, I just did it. He took it and said he waited till Christmas to open it.

I think you are right Kendrasue that every sub is different. I will email the ombudsman because I am so confused too. I just don't want to miss anything or do anything wrong and it sounds like you are like that too :) Just trying to love and support our sailors :) I will let you know if I hear anything for the Michigan Renee :)

My son said they have to store it in their personal space which consists of a small drawer under their mattress, a small drawer in there overhead area, and a small locker drawer. Maybe a ziplock fits better than a shoebox. I mailed him a shoebox full of treats to the last address the Ohio Ombudsman gave me and he never got it at the Japan port call or Guam. It really was a test package and maybe it will end up in WA. I won't do that again. Live and learn :)
