Dear Cookieb,

There are sailors who do have to live on the ship but then there are others who stay at the barracks or even can get a apartment off base, but it depends on what they are making and if they are allowed.   My son is in on the USS MUSTIN and they are a busy ship .   My son is coming home three days after Christmas and I can't wait, it has been two years since I have seen him so I am excited!!!!

No, he'll have a barracks room or he can live off base. He will have an assigned rack on the ship but he needn't stay in it off duty. ;)

My son has been assigned to the USS Mustin and will be leaving just before Christmas (of course I'm hoping he can get a few extra days of leave so he can be home for Christmas).  Anyway, since he's been assigned to the ship, I was told that he will live on the ship (and not on base) even while in port.  Is this correct?

Also, I'm reading about communicating via facebook, skype - which is what I was hoping for.  But I'm confused on the cell phones - are you keeping the phones active so that they can text/call when they are in port? or do they have different/special cell phones and plans?

Hi Maine Mom. I send packages to the address that my Navy girl gave me and they have successfully gotten to her. Usually it takes a couple of weeks but it all depends on where they are. I send whatever size box I need under 18" x 18" and I have always decorated the outside as well. Her fall box had fall leaves pasted all over the outside. I cover the out decorations with clear packing tape. That might now be as fun for a guy. Last year I sent Christmas decorations and goodies, and a box that said "do not open until Christmas" with presents. My advice is at this time of year  - Send early, send fun, happy things...YOU have fun creating it..and send what you'd like - .they will figure out where to put it. all the best

Hello-Sorry I have not been on in awhile. Is there a place to get info on sending out Christmas gifts etc? I know I can get a box from the post office and my son has given us a list of things he would like but I am hoping to get some more information. How long does it take aproximately?, tips on sending goodies, Christmas decorations? How much personal storage space do they have?  Maybe there are some veteran Moms, wives and girlfriends that have these answers, I hope so!

hello Everyone I guess my son has been on the ship the longest so far and he is still over there. We also chat once in a while from FB and his email address from yahoo when he is able too.  When they are on the base I hear from him more.  But I would like to say there may be weeks or month you have to go without hearing from your son or daughter when they deploy out or have some business they are required to do on base or in the area.   We as parents/siblings/wives/friends is pray for them and their safety and wait till they are able to get ahold of us.  It is just as hard on them when they don't get to hear from us or talk to us as it is for us.   I am very proud of my son and what he is doing and pray for the safety of not just him but for his shipmates and the ship.

Hi MaineMom,

My son just got assigned to the Mustin and is in GL awaiting a ship out date.  We are from Maine too! Though we are living in Mass right now.  I am so nervous about how we will be able to stay in touch so your note is encouraging!  Thanks!

Hello! My son is also on the USS Mustin and he is really enjoying it-he says he is very busy! I am so grateful that he sends messages home via Facebook and can text at times. He plans on getting a laptop soon so it will be great to Skype and see his face and hear his voice!
