Other destroyers are involved in search and rescue/recovery at sea. I suspect that the Mustin will be joining them, since an article published Saturday by Reuters news indicated that the Mustin was to leave Sunday to join the USS McCampbell and the USS Curtis Wilbur off the coast from the Miyagi Prefecture. Here's the article: http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/03/12/us-japan-quake-usa-aid-id...
Wow ... what awesome information! Thanks, FavePrincess! I've requested you as a friend so that I can PM you with my email address. When will my Sailor get a passport? When she gets there? And someone told me to have her REQUEST a sponsor ... is that done automatically or how does she go about that?
SOOOO stoked to be part of the Mustin family!
Hello all, please feel free to message me with your full name, email, and sailor's full name if you would like to be added to the Mustin Ombudsman Distribution list.
To address some of the recent discussion: The Navy will provide the sailor with a no-fee passport in order to travel between the US and Japan as well as around some of the foreign ports. The barracks are about a 2 minute walk from the Galley and exchange. The ship provides 3 meals a day onboard as well as a variety of snacks. The ships are very close tho the Fleet Recreation Center which includes a single sailor's game room, a food court, a NEX, and a gtm as well as free wireless. If you have any other questions please feel free to contact me but please bear in mind that your sailor will receive a shipboard sponsor to answer questions as soon as he or she has finalized orders. ;) Your sailor's address is the ship's address so he or she may receive mail there from day one.
Hope this is helpful! :)
I'm guessing that because it takes awhile to get the passport (unless military gets it right away?), she'll be gone from A-School by the time it arrives. That's why I figured it would need to come here ....
I'm going to work on getting mine too ... already pricing flights to Japan! :-) Hooyah!
Wow ... thanks for all the info everyone! I've already told her to go get her passport as soon as she gets her "green dot" ... I guess she'll probably have to have it sent home since she won't have an address yet, and then I'll have to send it to her. Is that the best way?
You guys are so informative ... especially knowing that it's tough to get back stateside on leave. That really helps ... we were trying to decide if she should take her whole 30 days between A-school and Japan ... sounds like that's her best bet.
This is weird ... I am so used to being so informed --- she went to bootcamp with more information than anyone, I think ... from all my research ... :-) Now ... I know nothing!
Thanks! I'm SOOO excited for her!! She has to finish A-school ... may be a few weeks ... so I guess we won't know if she'll catch up with the ship while underway or in port. She actually got a laptop as a bootcamp graduation and Christmas present (she was at RTC for Christmas) ... it's en route to her now. We will definitely practice skype-ing when it arrives!
I have so many questions ... Does everyone live on the ship while in port, or on the base? Do they have Internet in port? Underway? How long do you guys go without hearing something? What cool places will she see? Does she need a passport to come home on leave? Does she pay for that herself? I am all ears ... anything you are allowed to post (I know some info is classified), please tell me!!
