How do taxes work for the sailors?  My son was in Great Lakes for A-school and then Norfolk (and of course now on board the ship) so does he pay taxes to both states or what?

I haven't heard from my son in quite a while. Does anybody have any news from the ship or know when it will be back in Norfork Va?

Sharon, Thank you for the heads up and all the tips. This is kinda funny but we are from out of town so will be bringing Christmas gifts and one of the gifts is a kitchen knife set.  I would have never thought about it, but will leave it in the hotel room that morning!  Although I am sure the officers are nice, I do not want to spend any time with them that day, just with my daughter, ha, ha.

dear burnsey,  I went to norfolk to see the frigate Elrod come into port last month.  My nephew was on board.  They were returning from deployment.  A few things exciting to me were:  there was someone passing out American flags for us to wave as the ship arrived; there was a large enclosed tent with heaters blowing inside for those who were cold or who had small children; there was a DJ playing music-people were dancing and singing and shouting; alot of people had posters and signs to wave.  There was hot coffee, bottled water, doughnuts, and pizza in the tent (free).  What was really exciting is that the DJ somehow knew how close the ship was, so he would announce, "They are getting ready to come into view," and such.  It was soooooo exciting.  The Elrod is a much smaller ship, so I expect even more excitement this time.  Plan to arrive at Norfolk Naval Station early, as you will need to have your car inspected if you don't have a military tag on the windshield.  Do not bring weapons, even knives, as a general rule, and DON'T speed or talk on your cell phone while driving on post, unless you would like to personally meet and chat with a kind officer.  Overall, I was more than impressed and spent most of that morning hollaring and crying (then again, I cry every time I hear graduation music, even if I don't know anyone graduating).  I hope to meet you all there.

WHEN OH WHEN does the ship come in? My daughter is scheduled to come home to Alaska on New Years Day, but I would SO like to meet the ship! If I only knew what day they were coming in! I'm just afraid we'll miss each other in the airport! Our house is so Alasakn! I ran my poor husband ragged, trying to get new drapes, a shower curtain, fix everything, rearrange all the furniture. My second oldlest said "Is she coming to see you or sell real estate?" LOL! Had a guy stop by our table at McDonalds today and he ready my "May Daugter Serves Proudly in the US Navy" shirt. He puped our hand and kept saying "thank you" over and over. We were SO happy!

Melissa, thank you so much for the information. I forwarded it to Dorothy. She doesn't drive, but hopefully she can get there. Thats why I was looking for anyone who may live in the Virginia Beach area for her.

I just joined this group. My son is a culinary specialist who just got sent to the ship. That's all I know. My daughter in law and grandson are living in Virginia Beach. They only know one person. Do any of you have family in Norfolk who have a 7 month old?
