Does anyone know the day the ship gets back? I want to be there SO bad, but December travel from Alaska is usually awful. Oh, getting out of Alaska is no problem - Anchorage is very seldom shut down. I'm thinking more of Denver and O'Hare. I think I would DIE if I got stuck in one of them and missed the homecoming! I miss my daughter SO much, though. I know it's almost 4,700 miles and I don't know another living soul in Norfolk. My husband can't get off work, so I'd have to go alone. That worries me a bit because I'm not in the best physical health (I have fibromyalgia, liver disease and spinal stenosis). She wants to get off the ship and come straight to Alaska, and I'd LOVE that, except December isn't exactly the "garden month" up here. To be sure, I have plenty of winter gear for her - not too sure you can get arctic gear in Bahrain! (LOL!) I actually wanted to surprise HER! So if you something resembling a Weeble, in a fur trimmed anorak (yes, I wear fur because it is 25 to 50 below in the winter, and it's for WARMTH, not looks!) and mukluks (UGG boots are NOT waterproof, as I discovered 4 years ago!) and boots are "rated" not for fashion, but at the lowest temp they will keep your feet warm, it's probably me. And if it's above 30, I'll be in jeans and a t-shirt! LOL!

Actually, the fireweed jelly was last seen in the hands of some guy running down one of the corridors, being chased by 3 others!

Welcome to Lauren! My son is a sonar tech. We are missing him badly, and I know everyone is missing their loved ones. At least we are on the downhill side of this deployment. Preston's wife is expecting their second child the week they are supposed to return. I hope she can wait! I wish we had more members, so there would be more comments to read. It is nice to know that others are praying for a common concern. Sharon

Saoirse3-I'm new to this, but I believe that you can only buy the special phone cards (AT&T Ship to Shore Prepaid Phone Card) at the NEX or on the ship. Once they have the card, all you need is the PIN# and you can recharge the card from home by calling 1-800-569-2018. The cards are 20.00 but not sure how much you can recharge them for. My daughter has had her since June and has not used it up yet.

How do you get a prepaid phone card to send to your sailor? I know the only one they can use is the AT&T Ship to Shore and they said "anyone" can buy one at the Navy Exchange" (yeah, good luck with THAT one! LOL!) but Alaska doesn't exactly have Navy bases coming out of its ears and flying to SEATAC to buy a $20 phone card seems a little over the top! And our local AT&T store personnel are able to discuss your iPhone ONLY! Has anyone bought one anywhere else, like Wally World?

It wasn't actually the Normandy, it was the USS Sampson out of San Diego, but it was the same type of ship and it gives a pretty good idea of life at sea. My daughter was able to send one video and she sent it to her brand new nephew. She sang and read him bedtime stories, showed him her uniform and all the while Grandma is blubbering like a fool over his tiny little shoulder. Now everyone wants a copy and it's coveted more than a Princess Diana gown! Of course, Alexander's mom, my youngest daughter, is fiercely proud of her big sister in the Navy!

Does anyone know when the ship will get back to Norfolk? All I know is "December." And something tells me it's after Christmas. Sigh....

Thank you MomofsailorJ10! I will give it a try. I am amazed every day at the little details that trip us up, ha, ha. This is our first experience with a daughter in the Navy and she graduated from college, commissioned as an officer and deployed on her first sea duty all in one month! We are just trying to navigate through all the little details of keeping in contact, sending cards and packages, etc.

This is my daughters first deployment too. She joined the ship at the end of June. She wants calling cards so she can call from the ship. Does anyone know what type of calling card to get? Does it need to be an international card? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Finally, some shore leave! My daughter was getting "cabin fever" on the ship! After taking that virtual tour of the ship, I think I would have jumped overboard a long time ago! LOL! In a small way, I can understand because we live on a peninsula in Alaska.

Does anyone know when the ship is coming back? All I know is "December" and she wants to fly home as soon as the ship drops anchor. Anybody who wants to visit Alaska in December had better LOVE winter! But in truth, our winter last year was a LOT better than the lower 48! I've been knitting furiously to make enough "gear". Good grief, it's 107 degrees in Bahrain. And 52 degrees here! I'm comfortable in jeans and a t-shirt when it's 30. The kid is going to look like she's headed for Antarctica! But on the bright side, you can always ADD a layer of clothing to keep warm. Where do you go from naked when you're suffocating from the heat? Poor kids!
