My husband reported to TPU at Norfolk Naval Station and then 5 days later he got his port call in and had to fly out to meet the ship. I can tell you first hand that if the ship is not in dire need nor going to be porting or close to a port then they will not call for him till they are in a port. After he checks on board the ship they will issue him a mail address with his division andall that good stuff. I hope he enjoys the ship. My husband has been on carriers for 10 years and has never been on a small boy till now and he loves this ship. Do not send your sailor with ship to shore calling cards as the Oscar Austin does not have pay phones. However, they are allowed to use the log room phones and I think there is a phone in the mess deck area. Plus side these phones are free down side they cannot talk to long, It evens it's self out. Well, hope he likes the ship an may all our sailors be safe till they come home.

Been keeping up with our son through Facebook. Our packages seem to be taking more like 4-6 weeks to get there. He likes to receive beef jerky and gum. He requested some of his favorite cereals but the boxes were too big so I just put some in quart zip lock bags & taped them shut to make sure they wouldn't pop open. He also requested some of that cold Starbucks coffee mix. I know we don't post much here but "no news is good news", so I guess that's OK. At least they're half-way through! :) Deb

You need to have his rank and division, and the ships mailing address, then you pack it in a Flat Rate Box from the post office. Its been taking about 2 to 4 weeks to get a package to him.
I send trrailmix, ramen noodles, gatoraid mix, and other things my son requests. I try to send a box at least once every two weeks.

PS Rhonda, don't use your first and last name, that's what a mom told me, when I first started using N4Ms almost a year ago.

Got an email from the ombudsman stating the email is down and they are having issues with it. They hope to have it up by tomorrow. Lets keep our fingers crossed.

Was able to talk to my husband today and he sounded pleasent. They have been working long hours and doing many drills. He said it was very hot.... He is hoping for another port visist soon but they do not know when that will be if at all soon or not. They seem very busy on the ship right now. He stated they were working hard and could not wait for Sundays late sleepers lol. He did no seem down just missing family/home sick. Requested some Holloween treats in a care package. Cannot wait for this to end and have him back home. Hope everyone is good on this site as no one seems to post much. Well till next time I hope everyon hears from their sailors over the weekend weather it be a phone call or an email. The phones had been down for about 4 days till today. Have a great weekend as I will be enjoying this great fall like weather we have.

Thank you Navywifemom! I thought it was also strange that he had to report to a ship that was already deployed. We thought he would be able to stay behind at TPU till they returned. I was so amazed when we got his port call in. We are in the middle of adopting our 3 yr old son and I just found out last Thursday that they want to have him go to a medical consult to be "tested" for Autisim! We have had him sence birth and we knew he had some delays but never thought of this. Trying to do this all alone is hard. All the doctors ask is where is his father and it would help if he was here to understand what is going on and so he can get the training from therapist on how to disapline and handle him. I am sorry I think I am just venting. I am hanging in for the long haul and know this will be long and hard. I should thank God that he just reported and he missed the first 3 months. I thank you all for your loved ones service to this country! Thanks

Hello all, I am new to this group and I have a husband that just reported to the USS Oscar Austin a week ago. We have been on Shore duty for 3 years so the deployment thing is all new again! Not what I was looking forward to say the least! I just talked to the ombudsman and found out the perspective deployment dates not at all thrilled to say the least. Trying to stay positive and keep busy till he is safe at home.
