My son is not getting his packages. He said he got a few cards and he did get the package from the Semper Fi Sisters... but none that I am sending him which is the same address. My other sailor said to send the next ones certified because they have to sign for them on the ship and keeps the 'Mail Mafia' from stealing them. If they sign for them they have to answer where they are. So, My son is going to go without his Christmas Presents from home this year. Breaks my heart that he has to go through this his first deployment. My other Sailor son had no problem getting my packages when he was deployed.

Oh my gosh - that must have been so difficult. I was a wreck when my son was in bootcamp! He has been gone for 16 months now so I am getting used to him being gone, but this is a long way away! He calls us every day now - not hearing from him will be a ig adjustment. I guess we need to get used to it as he is leaning towards career Navy! Glad everything worked out well for you!

Yes, we were crazy.  We only knew that she went to the hospital - didn't know what was wrong with her, didn't know what hospital, could not talk to her.  Finally after a day and a half, a nurse called us and said she was calling to tell us that she was fine and we finally got to talk to her and she told us what happened.  But I did not sleep that night waiting to hear something.  It was wild.  But everything did work out and they assigned someone from the Navy to stay with her during her stay in the hospital.  But that was the first time she had been away from us (other than boot camp) so we were pretty frantic.  But all worked out well.  Thank the Lord!!!

I am happy to hear that! He is packed and ready to go! feeling good right now! We will be on the edge of our seats until we hear from him. I can't believe your daughter had to go to the hospital and you couldn't talk to her! I would be crazy!

He will feel better when he gets there.  When my daughter flew there from bootcamp she was sick on the plane the whole trip.  When she got there she ended up having go to their hospital and stay a week with a bladder infection. She was alone in a foreign country, couldn't understand their language, hated their food and I felt terrible not being there with her.  We only knew she had went to the hospital and could not contact her.  We waited and waited until her nurse finally contacted us and said she was doing fine.  What a trip! Believe me, we went thru it that first trip.  But they did take good care of her.  Thank God!  He will be fine.  They do take good care of them.

Thank you d0shir01! I appreciate the response. I think he will feel better when he actually gets there. The traveling will be long and tiring. I hope he gets a day or two to acclimate to the time zone before he meets the ship. I think it is just the fear of the unknown, but I think he was far more nervous for bootcamp. He has been in A & C school for 14 months so he is really ready to enter the fleet!! I plan on sending lots of goodies and keeping up via email and FB.

Kjkooz - Welcome.  My daughter did her first deployment the same way - as soon as she got out of bootcamp she flew over and caught up with the ship.  It was so new to us we really didn't know anything.  This second deployment we are more aware of some things.  Like they love getting boxes of goodies while there.  We can communicate with emails (sometimes).  They can call us when they get to port.  And reading this website really helps keep you up on things. This is her first Christmas she will miss - as well as Thanksgiving, births of her 2 new nephews and her birthday.  So, I just keep sending her emails and keeping her up on things.  She loves that.  You can also email her pictures.

Dee: Not sure what the protocal is for deployment.  My mom passed away while my daughter was still in Hawaii - the Red Cross notified her that day and she was on a plane the next day and got to stay a week.   Not sure about when they are out on the ship.

My son leaves San Diego on Thursday this week to fly overseas to meet the ship. First deployment, first time away for Christmas. We are all excited but nervous! Any tips for first time families to hold it together while their sailor is deployed? Sending my Christmas packages this week!

It is so nice of the Red Cross to negotiate the red tape involved with getting this type of message to our family members.  When my mother passed away during the last cruse my son was given a chance to come home for the funeral but it would have cost him in later leave.  He opted to stay aboard.  I do know that if a service member comes home for a funeral they are given just enough time for that and nothing else.  He would have had minimal time to pack, traveled on cargo carriers and arrived just in time for the service.  And, most likely he would have been heading back that same day.  Really not helpful with the grieving process.  My condolences to you and your family on your loss.
