Has anyone ordered from http://navyrackpacks.com/ ? They make replacement curtains for standard issue birthing racks on US navy ship for the sailors .

They provide much more darkening (heavier) fabric for more privacy and better sleeping conditions. They also have several pouches woven on the inside for sailors to stash their small personal items which may get loose or lost in their bunks. You can have your sailors last name stitched on the inside if you like. They can ship directly to the ship's APO if you like. I have read many positive testimonials about this product from sailors. Looks like a great Christmas gift idea. Does anyone know the color of their standard issue curtains?

Got to talk to our son just before they got underway. It was short but special. Got two emails so far, one early this morning. He is really adjusting well to life on-board. He said the crew he has met so far are great. Keeping busy and still much to learn.

No offense intended Dee.  It is just that when the ship is underway proper ingredients are hard to come by.  They do a good job.  Also, it is interesting how localized holiday foods can be.  A Southern style Christmas dinner is much different than Midwest style.  My son had barely heard of collard greens and never even seen such before having Thanksgiving with a ship mate last year.  Same with cornbread stuffing.

Thanks for the comments - that helps.  I will send her small things for Christmas since they don't have alot of room.

Did you all hear they are doing "The Biggest Loser" contest on the ship.  Groups are in a contest to see who can lose the most weight.  My daughter said not to send too much candy for now. hahah  I think that is great that they are working on staying healthy and watching their weight.  I am not sure how many are participating.  Good to have goals though.

Of course Government cannot get too involved in religious events but they do try to create a nice meal for the day and gifts are always appreciated.  Do remember they do not have a lot of room.  I think I gave my son his Christmas gift before they left last time.  He is asking for books this year along with food.  Meal replacement bars are appreciated for the times they are on duty over meal time.  My son has a huge sweet tooth so candy is a must.

Can we send them gifts for Christmas?  How does that work.  I know they don't have alot of room on the ship.  I wanted to send her a stocking with things in it.  Is that allowed?  Does anyone know the rules on that?  Do they even celebrate Christmas on the ship?  Can they have a small christmas tree or a stocking?

I think everything the Navy has received he has gotten ... eventually. It is the USPS that has failed more often.  One sea bag sent when he was leaving Norfolk for home, and then Hawaii, did not arrive in time for him to take with to Hawaii.  It was mailed at 62lb and two months later I was contacted by the US Army Dept of Frustrated Luggage regarding the 47lb package.  That's right the USPS lost 15lb from one sea bag.  Hummm?  And there was the Valentines box that was returned "undeliverable" to my house two months after it was mailed.

She called me again last night around 11:10 p.m.  She got 3 of the boxes out of 4 I sent her.  1 must have gotten lost.  Unless it catches up with her later.  I didn't realize that somtimes they don't get their packages.  I have only sent food so far.

Do any of you send Christmas packages?   Do they  have anything for Christmas on the ship? like a special meal, celebration, etc.?

Well I found 'bunk' size sheets, and they are ordered, but if that makes him remember his mama loves him then it is worth it. Besides they will have to be shipped to him too.  And he hasn't received the box I sent him yet.  It was bigger.  I hope that is what it slowing it down.  We have already had our share of packages going AWOL.
