This is my daughter's seond deployment.  The first one happened so fast after boot camp, we really didn't know what to expect or how to deal with it.  This time we are better prepared.  She knows to stop her cell phone charges while she is gone, have her bills paid automatically from her bank and we know more about sending her packages and how they really look forward to them.  It is hard to communicate on here because you can't talk about so many things. Dates, places, names, etc. which is totally for their safety.  But it is good to talk to others that have their loved ones deployed too.

My son is home on leave (YEA!!!) but will depart in a few weeks to join the PH already underway. So glad to have him here before this long deployment. @Jill, It is also my son's first deployment at his first duty station. We need to get more people involved on the page.

Just email your son and he can give you the ship address.

You don't need the boxes that say military on them, it's just a nice touch.  As long as the zip code is to an APO/FPO you will get the discount with flat rate boxes.  AND you have to use US Post Office, NOT UPS or FexEx or any others when shipping to those zip codes.  My son says this cap't is more concerned w/ the crew's welfare so they should be getting mail more regularly this cruse.

You still have to pay for shipping.  They told me it was a set price for a large box $13.45, a different price for a medium box $11.35 no matter what was in there.

May be different in your state.  I am in Kentucky.

My daughter loves home made cookies, soups (make sure pop top cans), pop corn and goodies like that.  I contacted our post office and they give out free boxes, tape and labels for military families that have someone deployed.

Thank God for emails.  I pray for them to have a safe deployment.

Wishes from home is a great way to send care packages.

Beef jerky, Slim Jims and meal replacement bars are requests from my son.  Be careful if you are on a budget.  I took a medium sized flat rate box to the grocery and filled it.  The total was $100!!!!  BYW you get a discount when mailing to FPO or APO addresses and don't forget you need a customs form so you must mail at a manned counter.
