Wow, you know your stuff, don't you? He scored in the 90's on the ASFAB (sp?) so they wanted him for CTI. So he said ok, but really wanted to be on a ship. He did just under a year of Mandarin and then his final security clearance wouldn't go through cuz of of a few questions he answered wrong. So he was going to have to redo the paper work of go on a ship. He wasnt looking forward to 5 yrs in an office in Hawaii (CTI's sign for 6 yrs) so he took the ship duty which is 4 yrs, so he only owed 3 then. He is so glad he made the choice, loves the ship. He got to use the Chinese when they were doing fight simulations during this deployment with "Chinese ships" and he was translating for the captain!

Thanks, Seabee, yes, I finally talked to base security and they said we will be on a list to get through the gates. So for the first night before they come in, we won't be able to stay in the room even if he makes the reservations for us?

Oh, and I know the Pinckney is one of the smaller ships, but not sure if the whole fleet comes back with them, which has some big ones with them.Maybe the frigards are the small ones they were talking about...

No prob Clockard! Anything to keep our boys safe! You said it totally fine :)  I emailed my son about where his ship comes in, so I'll wait for him to explain it all.  When he was at the Defense Language School in Monterey, he got us to stay at the officers' hotel which was beautiful! So I'm hoping you're right about him reserving the Gateway for us.

I just talked to the Navy Gateway Inn front desk and we can't stay there unless our sailor is staying there with us or if we are a spouse. Darn.

I called the Gateway Inn on base, but they asked me which part of the base his ship comes back to. I didn't know and was wondering if any of you knew. I know ist's San Diego, but is there a specific side? One of the wives I talk to said its the wet side, not the dry side. The hotel said the big ships come back on the North Island? And Clockard, I do know about OPSEC, but thanks for the reminder!

Hi, can anyone tell me if they know where their ship comes in in February? I need to make reservations and I'm not sure which location to book. Is it the North Island of the base?

Our son has received everything we have sent, too.  We have spoken to him once, I think, but he has emailed us several times.  We are remodeling our bathrooms and I have sent email pictures of the progress and he has gotten some of them. He seems upbeat when he emails---seems to be working a lot!

We just got a call from our son.  He sounded in good spirits.  They are going to a lot of ports this deployment.  He has gotten the 2 boxes I have mailed to him.

He said he gave our information to whomever he was supposed to, but we haven't gotten any pics. But he just transferred to the Pinckney the week before deployment.
