Colleen....good luck to your daughter!

Dawn, I think E4 with less than 2 yrs have to live on the ship. Not sure how the  barracks thinks works. My son lived with his sister and her fiance (both navy) so he didn't need/get a lease.  My son(E5), on Enterprise, is going through the process now of renting an apartment since his sister is xferring.  My daughter, on Ross, is an Officer and could live off base from day 1. Your son should request a sponsor from the ship who can explain everything and with correct info. I think your son can live off base but being under E4, he would not get the BAH-basic allowance for housing.  He would need to find roommates and split the costs. I did a tiger cruise on Ross and it is tight in berthing. Having a vehicle to get away from the ship is nice. Hope this helps!

Colleen, does he have to obtain his own housing??  won't he get base housing?  we were told he would be "on the ship" until he was an E4

Hi dawn, my daughter is on Ross.  She reported June 2010.  She leaves at the end of April and is transferring to Mayport, Fl. Ross is currently in the shipyard.  Not sure how long it will be there.  Norfolk is a large base.  If your son isn't already in the area, have him look for housing on the Norfolk side of the tunnel.  Traffic is horrible going to and leaving base during rush hour!  Welcome aboard.
