Thanks, Colleen!
As far as I know, while on the ship you can only use the ship's computers to go online. You can use your personal computer for games or whatever but cannot access the internet for security reasons. Cell phones only work while on deck, not inside the ship. So while on the ship, set phone to "airplane" mode or the battery won't last long searching for service. Don't know about barracks as my daughter rents a house.
Hope everyone is well. My son will join the Ross in a few days. I'm wondering what the computer situation is. My son can bring his own, but I'm wondering if there is a WiFi possibility. He has been using Hot Spot on his phone, but it is SOOO expensive. Can anyone help? Thanks!
You are such a good source of information! Thanks so much for all the info! Sounds like it will be a good place to be :)
Ross is a good ship, Morale is usually pretty good but they do work hard, sometimes long hours. Norfolk does get pretty hot in the summers and humid too.
Enlisted sailors are attached a 3ish years. New officers, Ensigns, til they at least earn their SWO (surface warfare officer) pins which can take 2+yrs. Of course, depends on needs of the Navy and probably your rating too like you said.
Thanks for the info! I've enjoyed reading about it. I'm in CA, so it's a bit of a trip, but maybe I'll get out there someday! I wonder how long sailors are usually "attached" to a ship. I guess it can vary depending upon rate, etc.
You can google the Ross to get basic info about it. It is DDG 71. My husband and I went on a Tiger Cruise March 2011. It was awesome, for us anyhow! We usually get Lindsay to take us on board when we visit, just have to talk her into it. They were going to have a Family Day Cruise in May but it was just cancelled. You sailor can usually take you aboard for a tour.
Magpie, Ross may be going "underway" soon which is out to sea for a couple days to a month or so. I do not believe it is scheduled for deployment til next yr sometime. Can't say much more, don't want to get in trouble with security issues! Sailors are Ross are going to be pretty busy this summer on the ship though, working long hours.
navywifer87, Nope, not academy. She graduated from Penn State 2010. She always try to do her best. I will let her know.
