I have not spoken to my son since Hawaii.  I really miss his voice and I send him e-mails and pictures every few days. I have not had an e-mail from him in quite some time.  It's really hard to get into the Christmas spirit this year.  This is the first Christmas we will not have him home.  I check my e-mail everyday to see if his message is there.  Hopefully, I will hear from him soon.

Welcome, NavyMom10!! I''ve only been with the group a few days and they've all been very sweet and supportive - glad you're with us!

Go, Shoup!

Hi, there.  I'm so glad I found this forum.

My mom died on 11/27, after my sister died on 11/3/09 and my dad on 3/4/10.  My sister is an Ensign on the Shoup and she is on the way to the States to attend a memorial service for my mom (she had to miss the wake and funeral, unfortunately).  So, my sis is now my kid :-) (we are almost 18 yrs apart).

I talked to my sister this am - communication was lousy last week; better Mon-Wed and now she is on another craft to go inland to get her flights home.  So, all seems to be well on the Shoup.

Erik doesn't write me unless I write him and ask a question. He will usually answer within a day - if he's allowed to! Otherwise, I just keep praying that they're all safe and know that it's all in Heavenly Fathers hands. Sorry. But that's all I've got!

So eriksmom, you are a veteran at this. I find it so unnerving. I am not getting any communication from my boy. This is his first everything. Though I have been monitoring his facebook and there isn't anything there either. Any words of wisdom?

Erik has been in for 5 years now. He was stationed on the Stethem in Japan (With the George Washington!) until April, when he transfered to the Stroup. It was a bit ironic that he transfered, and then a few months later was working with his old shipmates! I was relieved that he didn't go to Korea, but I'm not sure that fighting pirates is any safer!

Welcome to the group, ericsmom. My son joined up with the USS Shoup a bit late and have had very little contact. It helps to have everyone share their news. As Kristine's mom said, it is helpful to sign up for Google alerts. I have been getting news articles on a regular basis. Some are repetitive, but always welcomed.

Thank you, Kristine's Mom! It's wonderful to be a part of the group. I did find an article about them at: http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2010-11-29/u-s-destroyer-thwarts-pira...
I figured it was online, so it was safe to post it. (I put the link on my Facebook page.)

I thought that I was the only one that was not hearing from their sailor. Is anyone getting any emails from the ship? I am trying to follow the Shoup but there is little news. Have a wonderful holiday.
