No problem! Underway is exactly what you said: practice runs for themselves and sometimes other ships. Because the ship is still so new they're getting their qualifications done before deployment, just as your son gets 'quals' when he gone to different commands. About six months before deployment the underways get heavier to make sure everything's set. It's just part of the ships schedule. Like after a deployment they'll probably go to the yards for a while, come back to the piers and start all over again. Happy to help anytime!

Ellen I am new to all this can you explain what you mean by underway? Is that like practice runs. My son was talking so fast because he was in a hurry to get there he said he would be there a week and it was good for his training as they were going to sign him off on alot of what he has learned so far. You know they can not tell moms every thing.... So I thought I would check here thanks so much for your info...

The Truxtun has actually not been on a real deployment yet, it is only a year old. It's scheduled to deploy in Spring of 2011, but will be underway regularly until then.

Hi Is this ship going out again soon? My son is on another ship as a BM and they asked for volunteers to fill in on this ship so he said yes figuring it would be a good experience. He has only been in Norfolk since 4/29. Lucky for him 6 of his friends from GL are on the same ship as him and 1 his room mate so it made things so far a good transition. He will be on the USS Jason Dunham when it arrives. Take care

Hey! So Joe and your daughter did end up meeting- they are in the same duty section! Hope things are looking up for her!

Hey Cindy! I'm so sorry to hear your daughter is having a tough time. We would really love to help her out and get things going in a better direction for her. Joe said there's a chance they'll run into each other since the ship is relatively small. What is her last name? Ours is Morris. He has a had a good first few days and was happy to start things and get over the nerves. Tell her feel free to drop me and email at ekob6f@gmail.com. Joe mentioned the same thing about the phones and internet. One of our friends we know from Great Lakes is living with some of our friends who live in military housing in Norfolk because he hates the ship life too. It seems so weird to me to have them living on the ship when it is in port, but I guess it makes sense financially and spatially. Hope to hear from you or her soon :)

Hey Cindy! Sorry I didn't write back sooner, we were in the middle of our move this week and it got away from me. Joe checks in on Monday and is a little nervous about it, but I know once he gets a few days under his belt everything will be fine. Luckily it's not as cold here, but it did snow again today- not too much though.

That's awesome Cindy! What is her rate? My husband is an FC and is reporting in another week. She really picked a good time to come to Norfolk in the snow storm!

Hi! My husband just got orders to this destroyer and I couldn't find a group for it so I made one. It is a relatively new ship as well. Welcome all!
