Hi Lynda: Sorry to take so long to respond. Computer issues particularly on FB which is running inordinately slow. Thank you for the information. I understand they are in Central America. My son was underway August 2nd. I know communication will be sparse at thiis point but am glad to be a part of this group.
My son will be on board tomorrow and I'm so excited for him. He led his division in Basic and was at the top of his class in A School. Now he will be on the Vindegrift. Cyrus sent me a txt of the letter The Navy wrote which was very complimentar yand addressed to my ex......I'm just a little concerned that the Navy knows I'm also in Cyrus' life and that I would like to be notified in case anything happens or events etc. My son said he would take care of it but I don't want to concern him with anything that distracst him from his job. Any suggestions as to who I would write to?
Lynda, I found you on fb and sent you a request.
Thanks for your response Lynda. You have far more experience in this than I do. I'm still humming from getting this message from my son just a few minutes ago. These are his first orders. He graduated Basic on May 23rd. I've already googled the Vandegrift and I'm so excited for him!
Hi: I'm new to this group. I just received a message from my son that he will be leaving GL for San Diego sometime before the end of July to board the USS Vandegrift (FFG48). He is in A School right studying QM. I'm still learning the language here! Just establishing myself as I want to become more articulate and supportive and also to keep informed for myself and the rest of the family. We are all so proud of him!
Well they're gone to Central and South America. I feel guilty I wasn't there for his first deployment, but we've been skyping and texting a lot. He called me just before he deployed to say he loved me/us. I just hope that his phone will work internationally. Does anyone know how communication works while deployed?
Boo hoo! My son left for his first bit with our mighty Navy this week. Although I'm so excited for him, I miss him already.
There just wasn't enough time to spend with him during his 10 days leave, two of which were just traveling, and three were back at Great Lakes!I'll have to fly out to beautiful San Diego this summer to see him, if they don't deploy again.
Does anyone know, since they were just coming home this week following the rescue of that family, does that mean they won't deploy again for a while? That's what my son seems to think.
Anyhow, USS Vandergift, please take care of my son. He's precious cargo to me!
Hi Sandy,
Congrats on the wedding. That's wonderful news. I heard the FFG-48 was being decommissioned too. I'm hoping my son will be able to strike for a rate by then. He's been scoring top of his class and was ranked up a week ago. I'm just hoping that since it is a small ship, he will stand out to his commander, who will recommend him to strike for an MOS sooner rather than later. He will be home next week. Then off to San Diego to report in to his station. Yeah, I don't think the recruiter did a good job of it. He went PACT too and so my son looked up to him for advice. So far, he likes the hands-on, but he could have had a better MOS with his scores and now they mean nothing! Well good luck with the wedding plans. TTYL. ~Dawn
My son is PACT-SN, which means he is undesignated and will (should) get on the job training in many fields (although I hear he will be scraping paint) and then in two years will be able to strike for a rate in a field he enjoys. We'll see how that works out. His recruiter recommended it, but I'm not sure how this is going to work for him. I am reading mixed reviews of the program. It's a shame because he scored in the 90s on his ASVAB. So right now he's still in Great Lakes and they have a back log on paperwork for this program, so we don't have an estimate of when he will get his leave or when he has to report to San Diego. I would imagine it will be be before September, though. Did your son already go to A school? Why is he taking all 30 days now? Is that the norm? I thought all they had was 30 days a year.
Lynda, I guess it's between you and me. My son was just assigned to the Vandergrift, but won't arrive there for a few weeks, at least. How about you?
