Same here. I havent heard from mine by phone and I even gave him several international calling cards that was 'guaranteed' to be usable from anywhere in the world! Hmmm...wonder who else is getting "my" calls???!!! I was also told by command that they are having difficulty again with the email system off and on, so I am not surprised I havent heard much lately.
I send a little of everything. I, too, send the white stuff of socks, T's, skivies (laundry at sea makes whites turn grey!), plus some of those detergent/softener/anti-static sheets in one, and Tide to Go pens while it is still dress whites season. Seek n Find puzzles, movies, munchies, gum,candy,tuna packets,crackers,nuts, microwave popcorn, soups,ramen noodles- anything basically that they like. They tend to share, as they havent much room to store anything. One word of caution, I usually send food/eatable/drinkables in a box alone, and reading stuff/soaps/games in another. Even if food items are wrapped, they can still have a "soapy" taste if in the same box...not a real nice surprise! Sometimes, I write a "letter" all over the inside flaps of the box, and always include a letter!

You go and live in the peak of the moment hippmom! Treasure it, and know we are behind you and all those sailors! What a wonderful thrill! You gotta come back and tell us all about it, and pics to boot! Congrats!
Have had an email from mine too. Morale is up for them and hope that continues! Gotta get some more mail and packages out soon. Meanwhile, I will be busy for while too, other Navy son is coming home for a short vacation! Yeah! Least till he, too ships out.. :( But, I have this time to enjoy... just wish I knew in advance enough to get time off work. Sure stinks to have them here and cant be off...

It will be a grand occasion for sure! Yes, those homecomings are SWwweeeeet! Nothing to warm a moms heart better than that first hug off the dock! Been so busy trying to write letters, gather things for care packages to send em..
Annette, I think it was truly special that you were there. Your such a caring, wonderful mom. Had to be, your sailor had you take his car, and pack his things for him! No, honestly, I am so glad that they had some there to see them off. May be hard seeing loved ones there as they pull out, but can you imagine backing out away from the pier for months on end with future endeavors unknown, and Not a Soul watching you? So Annette, I thank you immensely to represent those of us. Had to be a real tug on the heart, and I applaude you for having that strength! Thank you, for me...And, I do thank you very much for those photos. I think it was a big deal, watching them man the rails and all then too. I only hope as you, I can at least be near the pier! I did make the homecoming last time, but I could not get to the 'night before ceremony', I was turned away at the gate, as I had a rental car. Guess I will have that again this time too.. :0{ Oh well. It is the homecoming I look forward to, and seeing all of you family girls!

I am with you ladies! I wanted to do that over the other weekend, and they were still at pier! Lol! I even feel that now, and I am FAR from the coastline anyway! :0}

I sure can understand their position on that tho. How hard it is to think of living aboard a metal house for the length of time they have anyway, let alone watching others at pier crying and hurt, then if it were your OWN family doing that! I am glad to not be there in many ways, yet that sense of reality makes me wish I were! Oh the perils of the what 'ifs'!!!

Hippmom, you and me both! No worldly force better try to come between me and my children in homecomings! And with trying to work it out for two at different times...ugh!!! Work tries hard enough to say they have to have so much notice...I just snicker and say--'you wanna tell our military that? Would you like to play out YOUR safety like that?' and walk on. So, if employment is lost at the cost of meeting a long sought after child whose been in harms way...so be it! God only has more in store for me, not them!

Thanks for sharing Annette! Wonderful photos...I knew my son wasnt being quite honest, he said their leaving was no big thing...I think he just thought would be harder on both of us for me to be there. He did say he wanted me there on the return. I did get to spend some time and even toured the ship last weekend, so I really cant complain either... :0{ Sure would've loved to had been there tho.. would even had been nice to have met another VG mom in person! Coming up tho...cant wait!

I just got back from there, couldnt stay the week :0{ But...on the bight side, I was given a tour of the ship! How awesome! Like you ladies, I will never get that opportunity for a tiger cruise (think that was the only way I was offered a tour of the ship, so I would be distracted and not keep asking!! Ha!) Siobhan, hope your drive back is safe, sound, and enjoyable after this kind of start! Marcia, sounds like your sailor is sooooo much like the rest of ours! They will all get along wonderfully! Hmmm, sure hope they arent teaming up against us.....!!!

Thanks hippmom! Say for you, we will be anxiously saying the prayers that your sons return is safe and soon! Wow!! I only would 'wish' to be so lucky to get the chance to do a tiger cruise! My sailors only make it sound that for me, as a mom, to go on their ships as being my sons, is a no go. Need be same gender type of thing.... :0[ I am not sure if that is right, or just for the time being, or if they would just prefer not having mom come...not sure which, or which is the worst! Hope will be smooooooooth sailing when the time comes for you! Keep us posted!
Hearts out for all....one day at a time...
I am headed to see both my sailors next weekend, both have promised to give me a tour of their ships, so will see! Have a grand 4th everyone!~

Your son will be quite busy, so many new things to learn and do, but he will really enjoy his time. So nice that you have had the time with him in the past, it is really amazing how quickly they have left home and we miss them terribly! And yet, each time I have seen them or fortunate enough that they could come home, I am reminded they are adults! Proud I be, but still my boys!

Welcome Deb! Glad to have you join our little group! What job does your son do? He will really like the VG, they are a good group of sailors! I think they all come out of schooling ready to hit the water running! Learning a job on paper/book/computer can only go so far, they sure want to put what's learned to
'practice'!!! Again, welcome aboard!
Annette, not so sure about coming out. If I do now, it will be earlier. Work will not allow me off on such short notice (they tend to require 6 months in advance...I told them, yeah, right. Military cant give that! Once it gets to homecoming...job or not, cant hold me back!!!) I am thinking of going over the 4th (always wanted to see a LARGE firework display!!!) as I can only have 3 days off. Will see still.

I was thinking about it, to see both my sailors. But I was not encouraged by my VG son :.0( He says will be way too busy getting ready and no time for visiting. But would still like to try for my other sailor's sake. Quite a ways to go for me, and I know my top priority will be the homecoming!
